Micro 4/3 1st day out with E-PL2 and surprised how good the 14-42 MkII is!!!

Went to Wisley RHS Garden, Woking, Surrey today as my dad was going there to take pics of the butterflies in the hot house so i thought i would stretch the E-PL2's legs for the 1st time and take some shots. The 20mm f/1.7 was predictably sharp and a joy to use as was my Zeiss 35mm Flektogon but the real surprise was that 14-42 f/3.5-5.6 MkII What a lens!! When i got back and downloaded the images i was pretty blown away buy the sharpness and cleanness of the images. This is certainly going to be my main walk about lens on bright days!!! Great camera also, a real real joy to use, I love it even more!!:D

Images are to follow but i thought i would pop 1 up from the day. I took about 70 plus shots and have about 50 keepers!! What a great day!

Finally, Andy! Thank goodness you got out there with your new true love, even if it was inside in a "hot house". I think I can see your glow, even from here. It's good to see a beautiful flower, instead of cold icy snow.(y) Looking forward to more!

Where is all the snow, Andy?!

It looks as though this really is a match made in heaven for you. I'm so glad this new "kit lens" has turned out to be such a winner - you're really showing us its range beautifully!

It's looking that way! The 20mm and 14-42 are a superb set and the camera is lovely to handle. The Flektogon is a bit front heavy but a lovely lens. I have just taken delivery of a Voigtlander 25mm f4 Snapshot Skopar which looks great and is small and light. It comes with a view finder too! Pic below... Things are looking good for the summer except i may be made redundant from the police at the end of march boo hoo. They are getting rid of all us internal agency staff!!!

Thanks BB, This time I'm going to need it!! Trouble is the job I'm doing will need to be filled by a temp contract full time person and the job has to be advertised for at least 2 weeks so anyone can apply. If the job is advertised internally i can not apply for it as I'm not allowed but i think in this instance for all us agency staff we are going to be allowed to apply but it's not certain. It really is a pain and quite a worry :(

Still, never mind, keep positive and something will turn up! i hope :D

Ooooh tell ya what....That Voigtlander lens is damn sharp and has a lovely feel.....nice!

Well, I wish I had more pull with your police force, Andy, but my bet is that they know they've got a great person with you. Why else would they keep rehiring you?

By the way, I've just spotted those black and white shots on your Flickr page. (y)

I have never had the Mk1 version (E-PL1 ) so i can't compare. I doubt 99.99999% of the population could tell the difference!! ISO is better which is quite important.

but the real surprise was that 14-42 f/3.5-5.6 MkII What a lens!!

I am a big fan of the 14-42mm MkI, which is also a real gem. I've been wondering: should I sell the MkI and get the MkII? That would give a slight weight reduction, and would enable mounting of some of the new lens accessories. I would like to compare the MTF charts of the two lenses. But the Olympus America site Zuiko Digital Lenses has the chart only for the MkI, in fact makes no reference to the existence of the MkII.

Is the MTF information for the newer lens available elsewhere?

[edit: answering my own question] The Olympus Asia (English) website Micro Four Thirds Interchangeable Lenses | Olympus: cameras, audio and binoculars has the MTF curves for both versions of the 14-42mm. The MkII charts better, as you would expect, but the differences are not dramatic.

This is the thing, you have to weigh up if it's worth going through the hassle and expense of upgrading your current lens. If the lens was that much better and you could see a difference that made a difference to your images then it will be worth it. You may be lucky and find a lens on ebay where someone is selling theirs as it was part of a kit not realizing it's the Mk2 version and selling it cheap.

I was going to buy the 14-45mm for my GF-1 but i have tested the 14-42m on the GF1 and it works really well so i don't think I'm going to bother.
