"no such thing as pro photographers"

really? She starts back-pedaling before she's even finished the sentence? You guys are giving her more credit than she deserves. I don't think she's bright enough for that, but I could be wrong.

A star performer at Google and then the head of Yahoo before the age of 40 has to have some intelligence and savvy.

BUT not necessarily about everything. Executives are sometimes clueless in the most amazing ways and I've known a bunch of them over the years. The really successful ones are a bizarre mix of vision and blindness, lol.

John, we're speaking of the top management of one of the more successful companies in the world. The upper level executives are extremely successful and know their stuff. And the stuff they don't know, the upper management knows where to get those answers. These people are groomed for public exposures ... if they're not groomed or ready ... then the company will find someone who is. Every single time a CFO or CEO opens their mouth the company can lose or gain millions and millions of dollars (see Apple). The top management knows that and prepares themselves accordingly.

The board at Yahoo has a history of short-lived CEOs. If Mayer's 1.1 billion dollar buy of Tumblr doesn't show a quick profit, the board will off her in the blink of an eye.

HP, Carly Fiorina and Compaq...ring any bells?

This is in no way restricted to executives. There have not been people being experts in everything since about 1800. Today one can only be an expert in a rather small area of knowledge and even the most competent ones are equally incompetent as all others in areas they are not experts in.

I disagree ... having spent some time in PR and having managed numerous campaigns ... she came off hitting all the talking points, to me the fumbling (as you called it) ... what little there was, was more of a mental process making sure she hit all the talking points ... draw a big balloon around this text with little balloons stretching from the big balloon to Mayer "... ahhh let's see I got points 1,3 'n' 5 gotta hit 2 'n' 4 ...".

I am sure that you are right.

After reviewing the video, I am more convinced that this was a deliberate marketing ploy. Hey, y'all come over to Flickr, we treat y'all like a pro at Flickr.

I think that was the message. However, I think that the part which caused all those hateful reactions was at least partly an accident, even if she intended negative publicity. I may err, but in my opinion she did that part simply badly and I am not sure that how she was understood is exactly what she wanted to communicate. One cannot be too intelligent or too well paid to not making mistakes or not doing things wrong or not putting something badly .
