Pentax NEW Pentax Q7 Announced - with Bigger Sensor!

A rare event when an interchangeable lens mount has had the sensor behind it grow in size, in this case from 1/2.3 to 1/1.7 - which puts it on the same footing as the most of the serious fixed lens compacts. And at about the same price.

Pentax announces Q7 with larger 12MP BSI CMOS sensor: Digital Photography Review

And it doesn't look too bad either! Kit lens looks to be 24-72 (35 equiv) which is useful.

Wonder if it might upsize to M43 in another year or two ?

Thanks. Lenses become more interesting with the new sensor:

Equivalent focal length on Q7
Standard Prime 8.5mm F1.9 ~ 39mm
Standard Zoom 5–15mm F2.8–4.5 ~ 23-69mm
Telephoto Zoom 15–45mm F2.8~ 69–207mm

I can see picking up a Q7 body once prices come down a bit. I like the larger sensor and I even like the slightly wider field of view it will give me with my existing Q-mount lenses. And I still have my original magnesium-bodied Q for fun, telephoto experiments.

Is it just me or does this camera have a face only a mother can love? :tomato2:
Well not just the face but the back and even its front with its flash out.

I think the yellow is pretty darned cute. If I had one, I'd leave the flash extended all the time, too. It would make me look a little crazier. And I'd also need a big flash on that hotshoe, too.

B&H has the Q7 (pre-order) for $500 with the 5-15 zoom and $700 with the 5-15 and the 15-45. That's a more sensible pricing structure since it really competes with the Lumix LX7 and the Oly XZ-2. That longer constant aperture 2.8 zoom is a real bonus for this body. Assuming a 4.2 crop factor, that's 21-62 and 62-189 for the long one. That's pretty wide at the low end, making that smaller zoom a neat street lens (2.8-4).

OK: Read the DPR article, so make that 23-69, 69-207 equivalent.

The flash is funny looking, but with the right color scheme the camera can look quite classy.

I think it is turning in to a great alternative to higher end fixed lens compacts. Maybe not at the RX100 level, but possibly better than everything else.

It would be great to attach a 50mm f/1.4 on there and get a fast 230mm equivalent. Or a cheap 135mm f/2.8 for a fast 621mm!

Still partial to the look of the original Q, which my wife uses, but I am glad to see Pentax squeeze in a bigger sensor and continue to support for the system!

Hoping we see a new APS-C ILC system from Pentax/Ricoh one of these days.

I believe that the camera industry will generally move to mirrorless bodies with electronic viewfinders before very long. I'm sure a view "pure" DSLRs with mirrors will continue to exist for the hard-core traditionalists. But I think economics will force the hand of the camera makers. Rumors are floating that Sony's next generation of SLT cameras will drop the translucent mirrror entirely and become true mirrorless devices. Others are likely to follow.

It's easy to make a DSLR mirrorless (see the Pentax K-01), but my definition of a true mirrorless camera is a clean sheet, ground-up design based around shortening the optical path from lens to sensor.

This camera is ugly. If you were to remove ALL of the lettering on the camera and lens and replace it with something Professionally done...and remove that ugly black knob on the right hand side....not to mention that SILLY little flash unit...things would be MUCH better. Pentax cameras have always been kinda cheap looking toys...going back many years. It's in their DNA.
