Fuji Fujifilm Finepix X100 - Pricing, Availability and general OMG

No, no, you're fine with thinking out loud here. We all do it and it's part of the whole process. I was just giving Don a hard time about his "nexophilism" .;)

With the way the camera landscape is changing, there's a lot to think about unless someone has extremely deep pockets and/or is really great at selling their gear. I can easily see how the NEX is a very attractive camera. Too easily.;)

The early reviews are like for any good camera. There's a certain wonderful buzz that permeates, a few flaws are identified, which are quickly rationalized either into features or at worst inconsequential **. Then the pixel peepers who were somehow expecting perfection THIS TIME are disappointed YET AGAIN!! But over time some really nice photos show up that remind us that its a tool that, in front of the right set of eyes, can produce wonderful photographs (not to mention plenty of fairly useless ones) and it really comes down to whether it suits an individual's style of shooting or not. As for bokeh, to stick with the Philly theme, I can take mine wid (m43 with Voightlander 50 f1.4) or widdout (LX-5)!

** The most wonderful example of this so far has to do with auto-focus speed. The initial hopes and dreams were of world class, DSLR level, GH2 slaying AF speeds. The reality seems to be its about the same as a gf1. Which at first was met with blasphemous gasps of horror - that must be an error! Then it was acknowledged that the gf1 AF isn't bad at all and now the gf1 is seen as the greatest thing since sliced bread. At least in terms of AF - but you'd never want one of those horrible little m43 sensors - HEAVENS no! And now the gf1 is being heralded as the finest auto-focussing camera around, comparable to the Nikon D700 I think I saw in one post. Mind you, all of this took several hours to evolve even given the amazing speed of global communications today...

I think it'll be a fine little camera for the right person...

Thanks so much for keeping us/me in the loop, Deirdre!

OK, so there I am reading along..intermittently...and I hit post #15 Rangefinderforum.com - View Single Post - Focus on Imaging impressions in which a member there writes
Just got back from the show too. Went to see the X100 as soon as we’d arrived.
Very very impressed. The optical viewfinder is excellent, far better than I’d imagined it might be. To my mind, and in its own way, the viewfinder is as good as the Zeiss Ikon’s and better than the M7’s. (Of course, this view was formed in a state of great excitement and in the heat of the moment but I’m pretty sure I’ll still feel the same once I try it out for a longer period of time and in a calmer state of mind).
Since I know Don is very interested in the optical viewfinder, I immediately email him...only to find as I continue reading that he's waaaaay ahead of me.;)

The most heartwarming entry for me, also by this member was
All in all the X100 is lovely camera of great beauty and charm. It’s gives you the completely irrational feeling that you want to have it and use it whatever its picture quality turns out to be. It’s got such visceral appeal - it just makes you want to wrap it in your hands and actively search out pictures.

Yes, just one person's opinion...but it is a beautifully written one.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, the cheapest option in the UK would be to go to a reputable EU store where the standard price is 999 EUROS, so around 840 GBP + shipping. Could make it more difficult if there is a problem/fault with the camera, although highly unlikely still worth considering... You 'pay' for the ease of transactions within the UK of course...

Yep I noted that price in the first post soon after you mentioned it. I was hoping someone had seen a smaller number with a £ sign already in front of it... :)

Ooo, I am quite jealous! I am too far away to check it out myself in person. Did your friend like it, bubzz?

He loved it! Said it looked and felt like everything he hoped it would be. Sadly, I'll have to wait a while having just bought a GF1 and a couple of adapters - one for my 15mm LTM Heliar and a Nikon one for my various bits of Nikon glass.
