Micro 4/3 Smallest m43: Panasonic GM1+12-32 f/3.5-5.6 for 699 Euro

Would love it if not for the lack of an EVF. Panasonic has a small one in the LF1, I wonder why did they not use it on the GM1 - even if it added a few millimeters to the body.

It is official now and there is an optional grip also:)

"In addition to the 12-32mm, Panasonic expects to have a premium 15mm (30mm equivalent) F1.7 Leica Summilux lens available sometime next year, designed specifically to match the slim dimensions of the GM1."

If the lens mount is going to be sticking out, why not just make the body a little thicker to encompass the mount, thereby making the body more holdable?

Yes, sb in dpreview was saying why they didn't make it fixed lens and put the lens inside the body so it is more comparable to RX100. Then it could have been a competitive high end P&S.

Also one negative is that the shutter has a max of 1/500 mechanically, but electronically it's a max of 1/16,000. So if you are using a fast lens, you will be limited to non-moving subjects (w/o nd filter) eg again 1/10sec e-shutter reading speed. So maybe next gen Pana/Sony sensors can read faster and make it all e-shutter... Most of compacts are limited to 1/2000sec... That is why Sony chose 1inch sensor for the RX10, eg faster read out speed and faster af eg compared to nex apsc/RX1 sensors.

If the lens mount is going to be sticking out, why not just make the body a little thicker to encompass the mount, thereby making the body more hold able?

I'm very attracted to this camera. Love a small camera, and I love the aesthetics. But I don't think I quite understand it over the RX100. Controls here might be a touch better, but not a lot better. The RX100 starts at f/1.8, which is very handy. The RX100 has amazingly clean ISO for it's sensor size, and I don't think the Panny 43 sensor can make up the difference (i.e. RX100 at f/1.8 is probably better than the GM1 at f/3.5, given the almost 2 stops difference in ISO). It'd be interesting to see it with the PL15/1.7, but I do wonder, as others have noted, why do the m43 makers refuse to make a fixed lens/fast aperture m43 compact? That would be quite compelling.

I've wondered about that for a while now. I think the main issue is just the lens would be too big, even if it collapsed inside the body. I think what would be cool is a leaf shutter though. Just look at this camera. Even if the lens collapsed inside the body(not much, only a 20mm flange distance), the lens would still protrude, needing to make the body overall thicker. And thats with an f3.5 lens.

The GM1 gives the (original) RX100 a serious run for the money, considering that both are lacking tilting LCDs and hotshoes. The RX100 Mk II should still feel safe - despite the same price tag - for potential buyers who really buy into either or both features.

Thumbs up to Panasonic for finally squeezing MFT into a body that's smaller than the Ricoh GR. Someone should try to put the Olympus lens cap lens on this to see how much of a "toy camera" it looks. :D

Looks super small. It's hard to see how it would work in real life, looking only at web pictures. This is definitely one of those cameras that one needs to see in person. I wonder how small the announced PanaLeica 15mm will be.

Funny thing is, I've seen v. little chatter about the fact that the PL15 seems to have an Ap ring on front.

What if future Panny primes had an aperture ring??

mu-43 posters also are saying a compact 35-100 to match the GM1 was announced, though I missed that.

I said I'd never get back into m43. This is pretty tempting!
