Taken close to midnight, at the beautiful old urban rose garden near my friends' house in Portland, Oregon. Complete with grainy high ISO effects and diffracted lighting from the nearby streetlamp.
This is the November 10 barge, not the November 7 barge. A front's moving in, it's supposed to get cold and maybe snow, so I figured I should get out there for sure tonight. I lugged the tripod along with the D40 (seriously pushing the limits of "compact," but I figure if I can carry the tripod to the river and back on foot, that's compact, right? (Never mind it's only 4 paved blocks one way!)) I think I need to paint dark and light arrows in nail polish on the back of the camera - I don't know my left from my right, and once I get under 100, I know the numbers change from fractions of seconds to seconds, and for some reason my brain freezes up at that point so I can't tell if "Subject is too dark," is a genuine warning or just the camera getting uppity. Oh well, one step at a time!
