Bought a new serious compact!

I love films, video, Anything at all to do with cinema. I would so love one of these. I would love one if, I was 30years younger. If I had a super computer and software to edit the footage. If I could be bothered to learn to use the software. So I think i'll carry on dreaming and stick with stills and the video mode on my iPhone. What a super bit of kit though. And pulling stills from the video seems to work fine.

so it doesn't DO stills....at all? Or it's optimized for video and that's all you'll use it for?

Love the widescreen aspect ratio. And you seem to shoot with the same shallow DOF and get the same look with that camera that you do with your Leica.

*heads off to Google "pocket cinema camera"*

I've got the Voigtlander 17.55mm f/0.95 on order for this camera. That will be the lens that I'll leave on the camera most of the time.

The camera doesn't do stills at all, not like a traditional still photography camera anyway. It's got a 'record' button with the little red dot on it that starts and stops the recording function. It records in a choice of 23.98, or 24, or 25, or 29.97, or 30 frames per second only.

If you record on the raw setting, the camera produces each frame as a separate Cinema DNG raw file which is why I'm able to grade the footage in Lightroom. I'm really happy with the fact that I can grade it exactly the same way as I do for my stills. But I will still have to learn how to grade it properly using a professional filmmaking application like DaVinci Resolve or Colorista which will have filmmaking-related tools/options.

Those are really nice shots! We use a number of BM products in the broadcasting department where I teach. Incredible products. Thanks for sharing the images.
. . . David

Thanks!

Is it a film school where you teach or is the broadcasting department purely for actual broadcasting purposes?

I went to film school a few years ago but just... just ... missed out on the DSLR filmmaking revolution when the Canon 5D started wow-ing the filmmaking community. We were still using tape with the old trusty Sony PD-150 for our documentary projects. I think it was the year after I graduated when the film school invested in five Red Ones and a few DSLRs. Missed it by that much! So I've had to teach myself the new digital filmmaking tech.

It's amazing: Five years after one gets out of school, almost everything one learns beyond the basics is dated. It's true in almost every discipline thesed ays: media, technology, medicine, etc.

That is true but I think with the recent advances starting from the Canon 5DmkII, things have really made huge leaps and bounds. We've gone from crappy and technologically limited video cameras that reigned through the 80s and 90s and early 2000s, through to the large sensors of the DSLRs to high resolution raw recording with dynamic range that is starting to exceed that of traditional film stock. All within the last 5 years.

I'm very curious about this camera. it's devoted to video but can obviously produce very nice stills. Another way the photography world could go.

The Red camera (www.red.com) started this just a few years ago. Their 'Epic' and 'Scarlet' cameras are currently used to produce big Hollywood blockbusters and in various other aspects of independent/budget filmmaking, as well as professional still photography work. There's quite a number of high end fashion magazine shoots that use the Red cameras now for still photography.

I like the ULTIMATE RIG on that site, lol. Itty bitty camera.. huge lens!

I know! haha... It used to blow my mind that the 'camera' part of the whole rig now constitutes a tiny part. This is what the average super 16mm film camera used to look like:

And now technology has come so far that that huge piece of machinery behind the huge lens can now be encapsulated in a tiny little camera which can match its dynamic range and film quality. Keeping in mind that Hollywood still occasionally makes use of the super 16mm format. Look at recent films like Black Swan and The Wrestler, and The Hurt Locker to name a few of my favourites.

That is awesome! I want a version of that Sigma f/1.8 zoom lens made for Fuji X mount. Those still came out great and the night shot is very impressive.

I am hoping to get a Metabones adapter when they release one for the EF mount so that I can use it on this lens on this camera. At the moment the 18-35mm works out to be roughly 52-100mm on this Pocket camera in super 16mm format. With the Metabones adapter this lens would become a more useful 36-72mm lens, AND I'd be able to gain a stop, so it will become a f/1.4 lens.

Congratulations! I'm getting a bit impatient with my dealer, as I seem to be number 2540 on the list for this camera! They've had about 20 come through, and I still don't have mine. But I get a lot of my gear from them, they look after me on price, and fortunately I'm not in a hurry. But your raw frames are making me itch for it! I've got a boatload of m43 glass just waiting for this camera.

Meanwhile, I'm having a blast with the GH3. So much more video friendly than the 5D Mark II, and the file quality is still excellent for 8 bit 4:0:0. (Come on, Blackmagic, send some more to my dealer!)

I can't wait to see Jadey, Keesha and Atom in motion :)

You know it'll happen!

Wow! I understood some of that. Love, love, love #2 of Jadey!

Thank you, she loves the sun and is not afraid to show it.

I would've thought you received yours already! I placed an order at a local store couple of weeks ago expecting at least a 6 week wait but I got a phone call from the store that they happened to have one in stock (the last one from the last batch). So I ended up getting mine the same day for the 'old price' which made me very happy. The next day I bought the Sigma lens, I planned to use that on the Scarlet anyway. And I've got the Voigtlander 17.5mm f/0.95 on the way which will give me roughly a standard 50mm on the Pocket.

I didn't know the GH3 does 4:0:0 ... I thought it was at least 4:2:0, I've seen some amazing footage from the GH3.
