Hi everyone, asked before at this website and just before ( ac ouple days before) at dpreview.

Does or does NOT Flickr respect copyrighted images?

Keep smiling, Herman

You have asked similar things before Herman, and got quite long answers as I remember.
What do you mean by "respect" Herman?
Is there something particular you are worried about happening to your images if you post them on Flickr?

There's also a "Help" forum at Flickr, where you might (if you're very lucky!) get a staff member to respond to a particular concern if you ask

Flickr will not patrol use of your images, that burden is on you to be vigilant. They will respect and apply and display any copyright you apply to your images. That doesn't stop people from stealing the smaller images and re-purposing them. But flickr will not sell your copyrighted images.

Here's an article about Flickr's terms of service:

At Flickr, your photos are always yours | Flickr Blog

Of course, remember that Flickr is a Yahoo company currently.

One of my images on Flickr gets a few views almost every day which makes me think it has been used on someones web site. Does anyone know if there's any way of finding out?

go to Google, click Images, and then in the search bar, click the gray camera icon on the right. copy-paste the url to your image, and google will search for your image on the web. it's pretty awesome :)

Thanks for the suggestions but neither found anywhere other than my flickr page. Maybe people just like the image but it is odd because it gets at least one view and usually between 3 and 9 every day.

I've had photos on Flickr for years and have never seen them use my photo without my consent. Others have, but that's another story.

Have a google for "tineye"
Last I heard, Tineye's database wasn't up to date, while Google's image search is better.

You...Stats

Click on the photo in question (if it is on the list) and the list of directing people to your photo (AKA Referrers) will appear. If it is not, click on "All photos and videos..." and then click "All Time" to find you photo. Then click on it and a list of all time Referrers will be shown.

Flickr stats are mostly useless for this purpose in my experience.

What's the evidence for tineye's db Being out of date by the way? I mean, where did you hear it and is the source trustworthy?

Do you know if was on "Explore"? When one of mine gets on Explore, it never dies. Some of them go really viral right away and then slow to a trickle. Some start as a trickle and stay that way. But just about any image that's ever gotten pulled into Explore still has views and favorites and the occasional comment trickling in. It could be that. I'm not sure how to check. Someone here had a web link that would check all of your images that had been on Explore and I used it once but I don't recall what it was...

Thanks everyone for your replies. This image has never been on explore and the stats say unknown source for a percentage of the views. I actually don't mind my images being used I'm just curious. A set of my images on the Virgin Music festival get loads of hits each year as the line up is announced because an independant web site has used them to give people and idea of what the festival is like. I'm quite flattered and the guy that runs the site asked me if he could use them.

Maybe the image is just a slow burner but it is the day in day out consistency that puzzles me. None of my other images show he same phenomenon.

Will noted that one of his images gets a few views per day. Sounds like those views are being recorded by Flickr, which does a decent job of tracking referrals. I was once able to track a photo of my foot in a cast to a forum where people wear casts to, ahem, get aroused. True story.

Last year I discovered that one of my photos had been stolen a couple of dozen times for use on websites, blogs, forum avatars, and funnily, to enter into a photo competition. I started tracking down the unlicensed copies with Tineye but then switched over to Google Image Search because I was getting many more hits. I've heard similar stories from others.

I think you are doing a disservice to those who are protesting. I doubt very much "they" are convinced of any such thing.
