Sony Showcase Sony A7 and 7r Image thread

I have both the E-M1 (and had an E-M5 before it was stolen) and the A7r, and feel they complement each other really well. I won't say Olympus is 'intuitive' - it's highly customizable, and once you figure out the best setup for various custom functions that works for you (bit of a challenge, with the various custom button options, now two extra on the front as well!) you get a camera that's finely tuned to how you want to shoot. The A7r is easy to use out of the box, and has a decent level of customization, but isn't quite as slick/complete as the E-M1.

I'll post more pics too but I wanted to share my thoughts on the autofocus in dim light. I have read a lot that suggested the a7r was bad but last night I shot some pics of my sons and his friends at cutbacks in very dim light and it focused fast and I think I only had one photo oof and that was because another boy came into frame. I was using face recognition so maybe that is there secret but it worked great. I was expecting Fuji x100 or xe1 focusing and it was a much more pleasurable experience. This camera is a keeper in my book. :)

I took this a couple weeks ago. The camera is great.

I'd go black and white also, but I'd see if there's any way you can darken up the text with the station name. The selective color gets at the same thing, but I don't personally like it that much. You might try dropping the yellow slider in the color channel information (if you're using software that allows it - Nik Silver Efex does) and then raising the red channel a bit so you don't lose too much of the brick wall along with the darkening the text. It's worth playing around with at least...

Edit - actually just had a play with the jpeg and the color channel bit didn't work too well, but just using the control point tools to darken up the text (particularly the left side in the light - I kept the part in the shade pretty light so I wouldn't lose it to the shadows) worked really well. If interested, it's worth a try...

Ron's updated on rf glass on A7 & A7R in comparison to M9:
» Sony a7R vs. Leica M9 infinity test with 20+ Leica, Zeiss, Voigtlander rangefinder lenses - TechTalk with Ron Scheffler
Lenses compared:

CV12, CV15, ZM18, 21 Lux, ZM21/2.8, 21 SEM, ZM25, 28 Cron, CV35/1.2 II, ZM35, Canon 35/2 LTM, RX1's 35/2 Sonnar, ZM35C, FE35, CV40, 50 Lux ASPH, Canon 50/1.4 LTM, CV50/1.5 LTM, ZM50C, ZM50P, FE55, CV75/1.8, ZM85/4, 90 Summarit.

Most lenses performed better or more 'naturally' on the M9. The widest decent non-native lens were the CV12 and 15 with very similar edge performance on both cameras, though both also have very strong vignetting and color shift. The CV35/1.2 II was the widest and least problematic. The 21 Lux also wasn't too bad, but lags in the outer zone until around f/5.6. The FE55 bests the other 50s for across frame consistency, though the Lux showed higher central performance while the ZM50P was decent, but seemingly a bit lower on the resolution scale. Everything longer than 50 was pretty much a draw, as would be expected...

An Unscientific Comparison

Just a casual comparison between the Leica M240 50mm Summilux and the Sony A7R and the ZE35mm 2.8. I was going through my pictures from Miami and noticed that I took very similar shots with these two cameras and so I thought it might be interesting to see the differences. I've processed them much the same way, LR5 followed by Colour Efex. I upped the blacks in both and sharpened the same. Both look good to me although it would appear that the Leica has brought out a bit more colour maybe? The first is the Leica, second the A7R.

Looks like the WB on the Leica is warmer and the difference in the clouds seems to make the blues of the Leica pop more. Maybe try and warm the Sony up to match the Leica and see what they look like.

That does look better, but yea the Leica seems to bring out the greens and browns better and the contrast with the darker sky of the Leica shot probably helps it too. It's a great shot.

To me the Leica is more "three dimensional " than the Sony. I owned an M9 for a brief time and while I loved the camera I just couldn't justify the cost, but when I compare my Leica photos to either my X-pro1 or my x-100 the Leica photos are just more pleasing to my eyes. Nice shot with both cameras!

Re: A7r vs M240 files, it looks like the latter shot was taken with some nice warm indirect afternoon sunlight, while the A7R shot looks like flat, behind-a-cloud light. There's only so much post-processing (Nik Efex Viveza might help...) that can fix flat lighting, IMO.
