Sony The NEX Image thread

That's pretty cool Don, sort of like what the "diorama" art filter on the newer Olympus cams try to simulate. Are you going to try using it on the street or mostly for more static types of shots?

Well, I have just read through this entire thread. Thanks for putting it up, BB! It has about convinced me that a NEX 5 with the 16mm (I love 24mm!) would be a good companion to the X100 with its closer to normal fixed lens. Between the two a shooter could have all they need for everything except telephoto work, which is still in my book the province of full DSLRs. The small cameras have repeatedly disappointed me at the telephoto end, but they excel at wider angles. BB, the X100 lens will not give you the kind of 24mm perspective you seem to excel with on the LX5 and the (borrowed) NEX5.

Dan,
We think alike. I have very little interest in anything in the tele range.
So, the Nex 5 will work well with the X100.
Like any camera, the Nex should be approached like a photo. If you look at it for what it is, then what it isn't won't matter.
I am really enjoying the Nex. It has passed the testing I do with all new gear. Try one out Dan. They hold retail value well in case you decide to sell it.
Oh', by all means get the UWA for your 16mm.
Don

Thanks, Don. As a matter of fact I just ordered one from B&H with both lenses since the price is best that way. The reviews of the UWA on Amazon agree with you. They are impressive so I will add that as well. Having shot with SLRs for so many years, beginning with Kodachrome, I am falling in love with what can be done with the fold out screens. I took some ground level shots of wildflowers this morning with a Nikon 60mm macro on a GH1. I don't know what this flower is but it grows close to the ground and has a lovely white and blue "cup" around the stamen. It's the first to bloom in my wildflower garden this year. The camera was so low to the ground that I would not have been able to put my eye to the viewfinder of my D7000. All the reviews here say that the screen on the NEX is lovely even in sunlight so that should be even better. The GH1 screen was usable but not great in the bright Carolina sun today. I am ordering an adapter as well so I can use my Nikon macros on the NEX. Did I mention that I love macro work? :) Thanks for the advice and encouragement! Love your street work, but since I live out in the country I don't get much opportunity for the type of scenes you are doing, except next time I visit my son and daughter-in-law in NYC probably carrying a NEX!

Great shots Don. $35 for a great lens and adapter!! May have to invest in one of those. Will be good for video if that's your bag!?!?.

I see you and Ray have the same borders and PPing on your images. What software is this you're both using?

Ray: Effing awesome images!!!!

Andy - the borders and processing are the new version (v. 2) of Silver Efex Pro. And thanks. Several more from that shoot on my Flickr Stream...

As long as this thread has gotten somewhat into a discussion of some Nex gear, I'll add this very small investment, on the off chance anyone feels the Nex screen needs screening. With this little guy popping open, it feels even MORE like an old twin lens reflex... I just got one (well I bought it a month or so ago - it just showed up yesterday). For $15 its hard to go terribly wrong. At the very least it will be a nice screen protector when the nex is in the bag. I'm not sure whether it'll be a help or hinderance while shooting - I can't say I've ever felt a NEED for shading the screen...

Fret not, Dan, I used to have the Leica X1 and enjoyed it very much....so I hope I'll find the X100 to be similar and better. Meanwhile...I may end up joining you Nexians, Nexophiles sometime, as well. Ya never know!

Don, if I didn't see that "dot com" advertisement on the bag within this person's shopping cart barrier and pick up on the nylon material that some of his or her belongings are made from, I'd have thought this was from a time past. The items in this store's windows are quite something - weird, interesting, cool and strange. The two heads are like gargoyles watching over and bearing witness to the desperate life of the sleeper who's sought sanctuary in that entrance way... If there had been candles lit, even electric ones, they would not have been out of place.

The more I look at this picture, the more I see. Very beautiful in a disturbing way, Don.

rcubed - I really like the way you've handled these shots - the contrast between these cars and the cherry blossoms has to be unique and looks great! I especially like the aggressive stance of the car in your first - with the canopies of pink around it. Lookin' good! :2thumbs:

I'd love to know your pping on these? Very cool and, to me, atypical.

I am excited. My NEX5 is due to arrive tomorrow. More when I have some pictures.

Selective burning and dodging. Then a lot of selective curves, levels, color balance, channel mixer adjustments.
For curves, gentle gentle S or C's. Play with individual color channels. And use more than 1 adjustment layer if necessary! I usually end up with 4-5 Curve adjustment layers alone just because I like to tweak. :)

1st job when you get it (after charging the battery!) is to download the latest firmware for the camera. I expect you will have V.2 installed and you need V.3 which will let you assign your soft keys which makes all the difference in using the camera.

Enjoy it and have PHUN!
