Sony next Sony FE lenses for A7(R)

Actually, the 70-200 f4 OSS didn't look as honking big as I expected it to be!

Congrats on the new lenses Gordon! Now, let's see some photos!

picked up a 24-70 f4 AND a 70-400 GII (couldn't help myself). If I get a 35, which I will, eventually, I'll have the set.

So far (after two hours) I'm very impressed with both. Had to micro adjust the 70-400 on both my a7 and a7r. Now it's spot on with both cameras. Nothing but indoor tests but so far the 24-70 seems to have that Zeiss thing going on, and I like it.

Also here is a video, in Japanese, showing the FE 70-200 f4 OSS on an A7. About a third of the way in.

Hmmm, this lens makes me really want to take more of a look at the A7. I thought this was gonna be bigger than it is, but it's just slightly larger and heavier than the Olympus 12-40, which is a really comfortable walk around lens. Combine this with a couple of faster Nikon lenses and an adapter for low light and this might be something. Need to see some reviews of this lens, and how well it focusses and otherwise performs on the A7. I think when my Df loaner is up, I may just have to return it and check this out before making a decision...

my personal benchmark on the DOF needed for portrait seperation is 50/2.0, and i extrapolate from there. the posted picture is very nice, but imo 70mm at f4 is very limiting; its like shooting a 50 at around 3.0 (2.8@50=4@75). personal background, im not a wide open guy, im not obssessed with fast lenses, in fact i think way too much emphasis is placed on 'fast' in todays photography. i think a 90/4 is just fine. but a 70/4 is imo really pushing it for some typical applications. it is subjective, yvmv!

Oh oh ... perhaps back with Sony so soon? :)

No, it was a fleeting thought. I've never been much of a zoom shooter and getting into a system when it's strength (at least at the focal lengths I like to shoot) is a zoom just isn't gonna happen. Give me a good 24 and/or 28 and a more refined second generation body and I'll take another look. For now, I'm thinking more and more about just going back to Fuji. Their prime lens selection has really developed and their bodies are getting really good, not that I ever had any problems with the X-Pro or XE1. The 23 f1.4 gives me one stop more light and the same DOF as the 35 f2.0 on the RX1. The one stop more light almost exactly makes up for the one stop better sensor in the RX1. The 18 f2.0 has the same relationship with the Nikon 28 f2.8 I've been using. And the 56 f1.2 has the same relationship with the 85 f1.8 I played around with on the Df. And I'm getting righteously sick of the dust and sensor cleaning issues with the Df.

So I think I may be about to come back full circle to where I was two years ago with an ongoing mix of m43 and Fuji and a little pocket camera (now the Nikon A, which suits me better than the GRD3 or LX5 I was using back then). If I was willing to shoot with big honking FAST full frame lenses, I'd probably go that way. But I'm not, so more and more I think I'm gonna end up back with APS for the normal range of primes and m43 for longer lenses and a zoom for the occasional situation where you need a zoom (which is rare but frequent enough to have 'em)...

Has anyone heard any more confirmation of this rumor?

I don't know about anybody else, but this would be a potentially game changing development for me to have a 16-35mm f/4 and a 35mm f/1.4 become available for FE mount in the near future.

Initial Sony Japanes release included a wide angle zoom, so it is coming, most probably 16-35mm f4 as anticipated. The plan also included fast prime and g macro afterwards. Fast prime was expected to be a 85mm but if they give a 90-100mm macro then maybe they can go to the wide side. Again the prime lens is in the plan, not sure about the focal length... 70-200 f4 will be released by March 20 in Japan and April 16-24 in US so I assume they will announce more details about the new lenses esp when SAR is saying they will have a big announcement in June for A77 update...

Hrm, thanks for the additional info - I hadn't been following the FE announcements since I wasn't interested in the A7 at initial release. That's good to hear there's at least some likelihood this could happen :)

Announced Sony plan is below, so 5 more lenses this year in addition to the announced 5 lenses, and another 5 next year. I am sure 2 lenses at 2014 end might be delivered next year, esp in US we are 1-1.5 month behind of release dates. They are following Fuji plan, very aggressive eg 15 lenses in 2-2.5 years. We'll see what we will end up with as it hasn't been very clear... I am guessing they are checking their plan vs sales also... Zeiss also said that they are aware of their zm lenses not being working w/ Sony A7(R) and will be making mf lenses which are not included in this list.
