Hope I'm not turning into a hipster

Joking aside, my respect for taking a bad situation with aplomb.

I should explain. My work life involved setting up systems for law enforcement, military, medical and education. I developed, installed and trained end users on how to do certain specific and technical tasks for which they were ill-prepared. We developed the first in-cruiser video system that had a camera mounted behind the driver's seat with a recorder in the trunk. It used 8mm video tapes! Activated by a switch when the emergency lights turned on. I can't believe how primitive those things were. We later did another similar system for a waste collection company that was having legal issues with damage claims.
In any case, my best friend was a guy who ran the photo department at our regional crime lab. Every mugshot taken in SW Ohio went through his photo lab. Whenever he saw a picture of me, and there were plenty because we also did all of those systems, he made prints and circulated them to every department he worked with. Then he digitized the most sinister and sent them out, too! I've been threatened with arrest for Failure To Do Right and Mopery but I've never actually hit the slammer in earnest!

Wow, "mopery" - maybe I could have arrested my offspring for that when she was an idle teen? I had never heard of that use of the word "to mope" as in the sense of being a vagrant, etc. Boy, that best friend of yours had quite the sense of humor.;) Certainly that was an interesting line of work you were in, Paul.

Cops and ER nurses are the two most viciously funny groups of people in the world. I spent hours training both groups and you never knew when they were going to turn on you. I loved them. The other side of that coin is the military. They have NO sense of humor.

I personally hate the term "hipster" and how it is thrown around. If there is some item or way of doing something that you find appealing then it is part of you. That is if your reasons for liking said item/action are not simply to follow a trend. There are many people who are into things not because they actually enjoy them but because they want to fit in. I like retro but I am anything but a trend follower, even if retro is a trend right now. I like it not because it is a trend but because I like it.

As for manual controls for photography that is anything BUT hipster. Very few people really get into understanding how cameras work and practicing it.

I hear you. To be a hipster in the pejorative sense to need to be a repeat offender, following every trend just because it's new.

I probably used the wrong word when I said "hipster". Remember that I'm in a very small town in SW Ohio that's totally occupied by aging hippies and research scientists from Wright-Patterson AFB. We wouldn't know a hipster from a threshing machine.:flowers_2:

You guys would have an out-of-body experience if you saw the bass player I play with. White prescription Ray Bans, hair shaved close on the sides but coiffed up top, full mustache, skinny jeans, rides uncomfortable single speed bikes... but my god can he tear up an upright bass.

I would love to have a Thruxton! The local dealer just started selling Triumph and to be honest I was surprised at how small the classic Triumphs are. They only have one Thruxton in a horrible green color but there are several Bonnevilles and a Scrambler plus an assortment of the modern Triumphs.

All of the classic British bikes were relatively small and light back in the day - most displacing 500 or 650ccs. The new Bonnevilles and variants, at ~ 800ccs, are more than enough for real-world use. But if you're over the age of 40, make sure you buy handlebar risers if you must have a Thruxton.

I'm an old BMW guy. R 50/60/69. The only British bike I've owned were Norton's. I had an Atlas and then a Commando when they came out with that model. I loved them but only for short rides. The BMW's could handle 10 hour days and still allow walking when you got off.

I think most of you would think I am a hipster, looking back at this thread. Which is to say, I think most of your calibrations are slightly off. Like when your grandmother sees a kid in a leather jacket and instantly assumes he's going to steal her purse.

I found this bit from the wikipedia entry very interesting.... Hipster (contemporary subculture) - Wikipedia......." Some analysts contend that the notion of the contemporary hipster is actually a myth created by marketing"

I see a lot of "hipsters" at the record shop. To me, what makes them hipsters is that they are buying the cool records to try to fit in instead of buying them because they're good. I think the same applies in a lot of other areas. I think intent defines a hipster more than what one buys or wears..

Was it hipster-ish to buy this car? I plead guilty as charged. ;-)

no chance of that qualifying you for Hipsterdom. This is from about 8 years ago. Today it would doom me to Everlasting Hipsterdom. In my defense, it was replaced with two Mercedes models, a C350 and a CLK350.
