Sony The NEX Image thread

Went out for a walk with the Kids to Box Hill as i took a little time off work so i thought i would take the NEX-5 and Vivitar 24mm f2.8 with me. Here are some of the results......

Ammunition dump from WW2. There are loads of these stretching all the way to the east coast.

1st job when you get it (after charging the battery!) is to download the latest firmware for the camera. I expect you will have V.2 installed and you need V.3 which will let you assign your soft keys which makes all the difference in using the camera.

Enjoy it and have PHUN!

Good tip, especially since I found mine came with v.1. It now has v.3 and I am about to take it out to put it through some trials. The menu is the most user friendly I have ever seen.

It makes a big difference upgrading the firmware. I love my camera so much more now. All we need are some new decent quality lenses!!!!!

First photos with my new NEX5

I got the camera this morning and set it up (after a 4 hour wait for the battery to charge). Here are a few shots from this afternoon. The deer and the rooster were with the 18-55 zoom, and the wagon was with the 16mm. All were at 5.6 or 6.3. I'm still waiting for an adapter so that I can try some Nikon and Zeiss lenses on it.

Don, did you find when you started using the NEX5 that your micro 4/3rd pics did not look so good any more? My first impression is that the NEX images are clearly better than what I was getting with the GF1.

D.... Yes sir. It took about 50 images with the Nex , I then sold all my M4/3 gear. Since then I have totally lost interest in that format.
I even left the other forum so I could work here and try to get the Nex going.

The thing is, the 18-55 and the 16mm are decent lenses for general work. They cut it ok and are not by any means slouches. Can you imagine some really good glass on the Nex?
I loved the Pens and the GF1 but once I started using the Nex....it was all over....

If you have the 16mm, the UWA is really nice. It actually improves the contrast and sharpness on the 16. About, $100.00 .... good investment.

Well, it looks like I am on the same track, Don. Here is one from today with the 16mm and the help of Silver Efex. I did get the UWA but have not had time to try it yet. Tomorrow is another day.

ooooh that's good!

I too have been seduced by my little black NEX camera, so much so that i sold my E-PL2 which i really liked but it's not a match for the NEX. Even though i have no AF lenses i still prefer the NEX. If i can find a 18-55 cheap enough i may give that lens a try but there is something about the Sony lenses i don't like but it's difficult to put my finger on what.

I went into a Sony store yesterday and they still have no idea on when these new lenses are coming out. Hope it's soon!!

Has anybody on this thread used the adapter with Sony A mount lenses? I would be interested to hear how that works. I will soon be trying my Nikon lenses on the NEX when the adapter arrives.

I haven't but have read the accounts of those who have. And it sounds very much like what happens when you use a 4/3 lens on an m43 body with an adapter. The quality of the image is great and it will auto-focus but the AF ranges from somewhat to painfully slow. A-mount lenses, like the 4/3 lenses, were designed around phase detect AF systems. While generally faster than the contrast detect systems used on the nex and the m43 bodies, the lenses only work well within their intended system. So a lens designed for phase detect is actually a good deal slower on a contrast detect body than a lens designed for that contrast detect system. So, in other words, probably good for landscapes and architecture, but not great for anything requiring much in the way of spontaneous shooting.

Andy, I spotted these on Flickr a bit earlier today. I am thrilled to see the famous 100 Acre Wood! Wonderful sky and view - must have been a great day. Did you run into Tiger bouncing around, per chance?;)
