... but forgot to put something in for scale. It's a couple of inches or so long.
I'm reasonably confident it's an Elephant Hawk Moth

Paul, ten out of ten for suggesting the inclusion of a scale, but non is needed for that species, it is indeed an Elephant Hawkmoth.

Taking my morning stroll around Scout Lake with the dogs, I barely caught these two out of the corner of my eye. They didn't seem too concerned with the giant Fuji about 1 cm away.

An insect in the making

A larva, it was feeding on Soft Rush (posed here on a dead stem), not the commonest of food plants, a sort of reverse search enabled by a site from "up north" (Northumberland Moths) which helpfully lists food plant and then what feeds on it, produced a result that fits, and is actually a notable moth for Devon, and not one I'm familiar with.
