Micro 4/3 No Love for the New Panasonic GM5?

Not much attention has been paid to the newly introduced Panasonic GM5. No surprise, of course, since all of the anticipation has been focused on the LX100 - a camera that I want to love but have problems with. The big trip up for me with the LX100 is the lack of an integrated flash - even a weaker one for fill use only. The GM5 solves that and still offers a built-in EVF (even if lower resolution than the LX100 unit) and more external controls than the GM1 - all at the same price (with kit lens) as the LX100...

Hands-on with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GM5

Of course, the GM5 doesn't offer that fast, fixed zoom lens. But I already have the 14mm f/2.5 and the 17mm f/1.7. Those lenses and the 12-32 might make an ideal little kit. Any thoughts?

Lots of love for the GM5. I enjoyed using the GM1 and would enjoy the GM5 even more. The LX100 steals its thunder though. And too bad Panasonic did not use the GH4's AF system on the GM5 (but did on the LX100).

Well, for me, the attraction of the LX100 is getting that classic zoom range at F/1.7 - 2.8, and not needing the other lenses. Getting less range at F/3.5 - 5.6 does nothing to motivate me.

That's a nice little lens though (given enough light). But agreed. Slow lenses are just not very enticing.

Do they use same batteries?

Or wait for lx200 w/ Pana 35-100mm f2.8:)

I just had a daangerous thought :D

How about (drumroll) getting both! The LX100 for the 24-75mm range and the GM5 with the new, small 35-100mm (for the 70-200 range)...
You'd be covered for most everything in a small bag (and no changing lenses...) :)

GM5 is great, just that the LX100 fills a BIG gap in Panasonic's lineup.

I expect to sell even more GM5s now. EVF and better ergonomics.

I don't think the GM5 has a built in flash, unless I'm missing it??

edit -- in fact, it uses the same flash as the LX100

How about (drumroll) getting both! ...

That's what I was thinking of, too - seriously, even if it sounds crazy. At this moment, I don't think I can forego the LX100 - it's too much like the camera I always wanted (though Olympus and/or Ricoh might have something even more intriguing up their sleeves - time will tell).

But the GM5 would really fill the space I had reserved for a PEN with a built-in EVF - the PL7 is very attractively priced and has M10 genes, so it's bound to be a great camera, but it lacks this one decisive feature. In contrast, the GM5 looks very much like the EVIL camera I dreamt up as an everyday companion. But, well - it's entirely possible that the LX100 will fulfill that purpose completely!

For me, the way to go is getting the LX100 first and then see what it still can't do for me. The camera that most probably could (even while lacking the obvious panache in terms of handling) is the GM5 - as of yet. If it had the external controls of the LX100, now, that would be an entirely different story ...

But the EPL7 will be great for selfies!! :)

"Selfies"? Whazzat? Before I discovered how inexpensive the camera was going to be, that kind of marketing blurb - mindless feature promotion - almost killed the camera for me. But around here, it'll be way cheaper than any other PL before, and it *is* the best PL yet by some margin.

EPL- what? I'd forgotten there were cameras other than the two new Panasonics!

You know, I think you're right there - the PL7 simply is too little, too late, all its merits notwithstanding. After seeing the LX100 and the GM5, I completely wrote off the PL7 as an option. That may be unfair or even unwise, but there's next to no innovation there - it's a nice package for a good price, and that's it. I'll wait for the experts to have their say before I decide, but I'm pretty sure I could pick up either Panasonic without regret ...
