Dead Camera Thread

ray your post was hysterical! lol! yeah, that was like ten years ago, maybe more, up at belleayre resort in the catskills. many great acts ive shot there including 3 dog night, emmy lou harris, aaron neville, michele shocked, lyle lovett, los lobos, charlie daniels etc. very intimate venue. that dr john photo is really heavily cropped, which makes that particular dead sony even more cool. that was a nice cam...btw, that stream shot is part of our 'spread'.

This thread is bringing back some forgotten memories (not just about cameras). Way Back in 69 I had my one & only visit to USA with some other students. It was a three month trip working our way across East to West Coast. Our first job was at The Pines Resort in the Catskills. In our nights off we made our way to some nightclub & saw some great bands (mostly English) Ten Years After etc. Can't remember the name of the club but it was very active & well supported. News of Brian Jones death was a bummer at the time. My first smell of Parmesan in a Pizza place was horrendous I recall blaming the guy behind me - I'm re-living as I type.

Coming from a guy who thinks there are no great stones records after the 60s, I can only imagine the news of Brian Jones death (at the shop, we like to say, no Jones, no Stones...... it's just not the same group)

And me and Parmesan don't get along either. I call it dirty feet cheese....that's what is smells like to me. Unless you're in a great Italian deli, and they've got the GOOD stuff....fresh off the boat (and freshly grated)...... and even then, I'd rather not.

The thing with film cameras is that the camera may be old, but the sensor can be almost as new as the day the photo was shot.

Here`s a quicky from my Leica Digilux 3 shot yesterday of my mining mate.

. Totally in love with this camera, I`ve had for some time and it still performs as I want it to.

No post processing.

The lens I used is the stock lens..... Leica D Vario-Elmarit 14-50mm f2.8-3.5.
Ex: 1/2500 @ f.3.5. 200 ISO. -0.33comp. F/L 50mm (100mm eqiv).

Thanks to rbelyell for the invite.........

hi bruce, glad to have you on board! i really like those portraits, and b&w in general. being new to the D3/L1, i was really struck by how the colors pop out. have you noticed this?

Thank you rbelyell, yes I have noticed.
There are some minor differences between the D3and the L1. I have owned the.... LC1,L1and the D2.

I do preffer the D3. I aslo concede that the L1 is an easier camera to use over the Leica.

I like the D3 for the Leica look in BW's the most. If I need colour shots for "pop" effect I use my Fuji cameras.
I also did preffer my D3 over my Leica M9 and thats a big statement but true. The D3 is such a bigger camera and just felt better to me....
.........I sold the M9.

Cheers.

bruce i am keen to understand the differences between the D3/L1 besides the b&w rendering. also, are you using it only with native lenses? i just received a focus confirm adapter to try a favorite manual focus lens on the L1, but i keep getting an error message, so i think it might be defective. but thats why i'm curious if youre using any adapted lenses...

No, I leave my Leica well enough alone. It gives me exactly what I want ie; Leica pics.

If I need what you are asking, I will use my other camera`s at which I may use the 'Metabones" adaptors (which I mainly use with Canon lenses) only but and I do mean BUT I like to stick with native equipment with each system.

For me... If I own a "Chevy" I would`nt put a "Ford" head on the block even if there was an improvement.

I`m just very fussy and very old school. (anal one might say) lol.

Oh I forgot to add, reblyell, as far a the difference between the L1 and the D3 short answer... NOT much the newest firmware brings them very close together. Putting aside the all the known similarities.

For me, the L1 is too cold in its colour rendition and too contrasty.
The D3 is probably a bit too warm in colour and Less contrasty conversely.

Either way, being a Leica person from way, way back I do prefer the later. Sharpness and most other areas the pretty much the same.

Having said all of that, I did prefer the LC1 rendition over the L1 but one is really limited with that camera.
The D2 was just as limited BUT I did NOT prefer that over the D3.

Its hard to explain with these camera`s until you shoot quite a few shots with them, a couple would`nt do. One needs to spend a bit of time with them and that`s not practical for most. However, I was lucky enough to own all of the forementioned cameras.

I hope this helps a little. Remember, as I said earlier, I did sell my M9, but will always keep the D3.

Cheers mate.
