Canon Showcase Canon G Series Image Thread

Kris, my wife shot this one on the G11. Shot as raw and processed in CS6. I just sold my G10 and I know I'm going to regret doing it.

My Canon PowerShot G12 is still used by me. I own better cameras, I own more expensive cameras, all of them are small and light, but none of them offer a 28-14mm equivalent zoom while staying that small. I just like it, because I have taken so many of my favorite photographs with this little camera.

I'm often tempted to go through my archives and dig up the raw files from the old G9 from 8/9 years ago and apply the PP skills to the files which I've learned in that time.

Yes, I cringe when I look at some of my earlier efforts.
I didn't start shooting raw until 2008, and only with the Sigma DP1 because it was necessary to get a decent image from it. Hardly any of my Canon G series or DSLR images were in raw until 2009 or later, so there's years of images that didn't get the benefit of raw. 30D and 5D Mark II jpegs were pretty malleable, although the real benefits came from raw. My photography mentor told me as early as 2004 that I should be shooting raw, but I didn't take her advice for ages. Back then, CF cards (remember those?) were expensive and limited in storage - a 1GB card was like a square of gold - and I liked to shoot a LOT. So rather than limit my ability to shoot, I used jpeg for years.

The Canon G7 lacked the ability to shoot raw at all; in order to do it, you had to use a hack. The raws were okay, but not spectacular. I think the real difference came through with larger sensor cameras at that time.

Sunset yesterday. What made this entertaining to shoot was: we were traveling downhill on a four-lane street in Troy, NY; buildings up to 3 stories high on either side; utility wires and lamp posts seemingly everywhere; driving west with the setting sun slightly off to our left. My wife (aka spotter-in-chief) is at the wheel, and we're talking to each other: Would you look at that? Holy Smokes! Wow!

And, just for fun, an extreme crop from the image above.

Not bad for an old camera.

PS -- I hope the ISO data is precise enough for everyone. :roflmao: (These are unmolested jpegs. I looked at them with Picasa, but, other than the cropping in the last frame, did not edit them; so I don't understand what's going on with the ISO info.)

Cheers, Jock
