According to Canon Rumours, the next EOS M camera, the M5, will be announced in 2 weeks time. It's moving upmarket and looks like it actually may be a contender in the mirrorless field.

"Canon EOS M5 known specifications:
  • 24.2mp (80D sensor or some variant, we’re 90% sure on this)
  • Built-in electronic viewfinder
  • A new AF system (Could be the best new feature of the EOS M line)
  • A more classical camera design, more in line with Fuji or Olympus
  • EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM coming alongside the new body
  • September 15, 2016 announcement (We’re 90% sure on this)"
I am very interested to see what they unveil.

The EF-M lenses would rock for a travel kit, and I like Canon colors. This would be v. interesting, but their thumbwheel and other PowerShot controls (and only LCD touch screen controls) are terrible. The body can't just be larger/bigger grip. It needs to be at LEAST Rebel-like (and out of PowerShot) or maybe even completely rethunk.

Lastly, Canon often toots their horn, but "radical change" to them is everyone elses "huh, I don't see any differences" so we shall see

But if they create a solid body that works with those lenses...

Fear that it will cannibalise their DSLR sales, pure and simple, just like Nikon.

Canikon could look at it in an entirely new way, to wit: "We make great cameras, DSLRs (there are advantages to this design) and mirrorless (there are advantages to this design). Either way, you can use all of our great lenses to make great photographs."

My guess: their DSLR sales would go down a little, but their mirrorless sales would more than compensate, and their lens sales would go up!

Fuji offers several different configuration of their interchangeable lens cameras, but they all use (or can use) the same set of lenses, no?

And that raises something else, from the "this is totally obvious" department: the key thing in buying an interchangeable lens camera system is to know with a certainty that you will have the lenses that you need.

BTW, I saw a very interesting claim on the internet the other day: "At every major stadium, there is a Canon outpost to provide support for professional photographers . . . " I know that there was a huge Canon support team dispatched to the Olympics, but does anyone know if the major stadium claim is true?

Cheers, Jock

The plot thickens :)

*UPDATED* Is This The Canon EOS M5?

My interest continues, especially if the AF is there.

This paired with the 22mm pancake and 11-22 UW would make a great travel combo.

Hmm...

Looks a lot like...

Interesting that they used a PS filter to render it. Suspect that was done because the prototype probably has physical "tells" on it traceable back to the beta tester. They would probably show up better in a straight product shot.

I don't understand why they don't make it compatibles with all the existing DSLR lenses . . . or am I missing something?
Cheers, Jock

You mean like this? Canon EF-M Lens Adapter Kit for Canon EF / EF-S 6098B002WB B&H

If they put a regular EF mount on the camera it would be much larger as DSLR lenses have a longer flange distance to allow for the mirror. Then you'd end up with something like the Sigma SD Quattro where the adapter is basicly built into the camera.
I prefer Canon's solution where you have the option to use the smaller EOS-M lenses or use the DSLR lenses with the adapter.

I think the M5 looks very interesting, but let's see what it turns out to be.

IMO, there's no way Canon releases something this functional. As Mr. Flores shows, this would make the M5 more functional than Canon's lowest end DSLR. I would LOVE to be surprised, but having followed canon for a while, I hold no hope for them to release anything other than minor incremental improvements :(

Ummm...wow. Even a broken clock is right twice a day, lol. If it has real AF, and if it's pretty compact, that would be really tempting. I gotta think Sony sensors will still be better. If they had this a few years back, I would have this and the Canon 6D. Not sure I want to switch systems (back) now.

Dual-Pixel CMOS AF is simply the best hybrid AF implementation right now. I suspect this will seriously disrupt the mirrorless market. Canon is already #2 in worldwide mirrorless sales, I guess they will be #1 by the end of 2017.
