Sony Looking for images shot with A7r2, great 50mm's like Voigtlander

Grokgod

Regular
Hi,
My Sony RX1 committed suicide by the flashing light of error E:63:00
So the focusing and manual are dead.
Possibly to be replaced by a A7r2.
I refuse to go used again.

So, I am looking for images that are shot on the A7r2 with GREAT micro contrast 50mm lenses.
Be it Leica, Voigtlander, Zeiss.
I want to find a combination that can match or even exceed the RX1 in milky glow, POP, and look.
Before I force myself to take out a loan and go Leica M10 and a Summicron.

So far on my list form research is the Voigtlander 50mm 1.5, the Zeiss 50mm ( one version I think has focusing issues) or one of the more expensive Leicas.
Though I did see that Voigtlander has come out with newer Sony mount lenses but no idea when they are to be released.

I am open to any brand and cost to get what I am looking for.

I am sure there must be a lot of photogs out there trying out some very interesting combos.

The first one that comes to hand (!) is the 50mm Summilux but I've softened the image quite a bit..... will keep looking!

I have a lot of 50mm lenses for the RF's and SLR's (as in > 100). If you are going to use RF lenses on an A7R2- you should send it in for the sensor modification done by companies such as Kolari. RF lenses are designed for cameras with a short Flange distance- they are close to the sensor. The thick stack used by Sony causes issues, you are not getting the full quality of an RF lens. The other issue: you are paying for some precision machining that goes into an RF lens for the Cam. The Sony does not use it- again extra expense for something not required on the mirrorless camera. The Sonnar is known for focus shift: this is not a problem for a mirrorless camera. You focus through the lens, any focus shift has already been accounted for.

Sony has Sony 50mm 1.8 / 1.4 / 2.8 Macro and 55 1.8 lenses and Zeiss has Loxia 50mm f2 planar all are very sharp and contrasty lenses so there are plenty of 50mm lenses available in fe mount. Mitakon has 50mm 0.95 also. As you said Voiglander has 3 new lenses coming also.

On A7r II, 50mm rf lenses behave better then the wider lenses. If you are not looking for wide open corner sharpness, usually they give you good sharpnesss stopped down. Otherwise you need Kolari mod as Brian said or use filters for each lens to correct some of the corner aberations:

Also Phillip Reeve has a good rf lens reviews which might answer some of your questions:

Zeiss ZM 50mm 1.5 Sonnar has good contrast wide open but not good edges wide open, so I prefer to use for one person at center shots:

Wow, thanks for the great information.
Kinda thrashes my hopes, for getting that Leica POP from a Sony with Leica lens or manual RF lens.
But that could save me ALOT of money!

And it does make sense that perhaps the Sony wouldn't get the full quality from manual lens meant for Leica range finder bodies.

I will have to research that more.
Thanks for the pointer.

Voigtlander did announce some Sony native lens options.
Have you heard of those?

Great shots!
And thanks for the links.

I will have to look closely at these photos but at first impressions they seem very modern looking.
Or maybe thats just my eye?

I had no idea I was opening such a can of issues when I was hoping for RF quality on a Sony moment body.
So much for an easy fix.
lol

It might be my processing. Sony uses Zeiss T coating also and that is close to the contrasty look you get from Zeiss lenses. Brian may answer for Leica pop, but I read more about Leica glow wide open on the older Leica lenses. Newer lenses look more modern. Here is Leica 50mm 2.5:

In comparison here is 50-60 yrs old Zeiss Contarex 50mm f2 planar shot (lower contrast then new Zeiss lenses):

I have- Voigtlander/Cosina makes some great lenses- well worth looking into.

There are some super-bargains out there for lenses. The Konica 50/1.7 AR-Mount manual focus lens cost all of $30. I modified it for my Leica, made an RF cam for it. You will have an easier time adapting!

Spring 2016, Konica 50/1.7 @F2.8 by fiftyonepointsix, on Flickr

Konica 50/1.7 AR-Hexanon (SLR Lens) adapted to Leica RF. Compares well with a Summicron. I have 4 of those.

Incredible snap especially with the older Zeiss. What a glow and pop and crackle yet still sublime.

Makes me want to get a cat. Almost lol

But I see what u mean by the more modern look in the first shot.
What a great way to gain insight into older lenses and their qualities.

4?! But of course.
Do these types of lens work with a A7r series or do they also need modifications, that I just discovered.

Oh man. This is getting more difficult to settle on. A Vintage lens education could take forever.

You can find adapters for most of the manual focus SLR lenses for Sony- they are inexpensive.

Konica AR Mount, Minolta MD Mount, Canon FD mount, Pentax M42 mount are the "dead mounts", high-quality lenses that sell for very low ($20~$50) prices.

Right but do these lens also need uhm sensor modification as LensHacker stated, to function properly with digital bodies?
That was completely new to me.
Since I have never used RF lens on a digital body.

Closest I have done is Canon on a Sony body.
Or Nikon on Canon bodies.
And it didn't look like it needed any modifications on the lens to work in that circumstance.

Going back to my earlier recommendation about the Nokton 58mm F1.4, I thought I'd post some examples of the sort of rendering you can expect. Shot with a D800E and X-T1 fwiw but that's not really relevant, it's the rendering of the lens which (I think) is what you're seeking.

Beautiful shots, love the look.
Thanks for the link to your Flicker.
I am off to stare at your photos in the Nokton folder.
Thanks.

Now this lens isn't a M mount right?
Its for DSLR's specifically F or FX mount it seems.
With Cpu contacts?

So it doesn't need any modifications.
Could be the simpler answer.

What are your thought on the Nokton 50mm 1.5?
TIA

I haven't used the Nokton you refer to, but I think you basically can't go wrong with any of them. I *think* they're made in the same factory as the Zeiss lenses. CPU contacts are in place, but only if used natively (the images you saw were Nikon mount). Doesn't really matter when you see the images.
