Pre-Orders are open for Luminar 2018

Fair enough Sue - I was a bit lazy. Have redirected my question to MacPhun/Skylum.

Reply from MacPhun/Skylum.

Hi Bill,

Luminar will support most of Adobe plug-ins, plus we are in the process of working directly with the plugin companies to make sure their plugins will run with Luminar. We are not currently working directly with Nik Software though.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

DXO did a very smart move taking over Nik for both the Effect Series and U-Point Technology. I'm stunned that all Google wanted from that suite was Snapseed and eventually sold off the portfolio. There is a huge base of Nik Efex users who want some continuity. So it's shaping up to be a cannibalizing of Adobe's base users by other downstream providers. Skylum/Macphun needed that DAM today, not in 2018.

I’m just trying to figure out the most cost effective way of moving off Adobe and still being able to print using ICC profiles. The only other product I’ve found so far is Capture One. Has anyone got any other suggestions?

I sent a message to them on their facebook page... clearly not something they had even thought of, the message is to be passed on to the developers for consideration. I wouldnt expect it for a long time though.

Thanks, Sue. It turns out the freebie ‘Sony only’ version of C1 is quite happy to print jpegs from any camera, so that might be the answer since I don’t print that often.

Dammit, they hooked me anyway. :) @kyteflyer

They knocked off an extra 10 bucks on top of the 59 Pre-Order since I was in the Windows Public Beta and had a valid key, hence I was considered an Upgrade instead of new buy. (Insert comedy laff track here) Son of a...

Just downloaded and installed the final version but I still can't see how to do a "Save as ..." export as the only alternative seems to be to overwrite the original.
I must be missing something or is Luminar a destructive editor?
Have queried Skylum support but they are a 'bit busy' at the moment.

Just downloaded and installed, and I've added back all the old presets I can find. Now if only I didn't have the pesky little matter of being at work, I could have some fun! First job will be to try to create LUTs, then see how good the Fuji RAF processing is.

Yep, the Windows Beta operated exactly that way. I would like to see more Output Options. It's natural for me to assess this product vs. LR - where I can do all these things: Rename, File Location, Size/Quality, Apply Watermark - all of that either fr a single file or Batch Processing.

When I Export it warns that the original image will be overwritten. If I say "no" it exits without saving - this is weird behaviour unless I'm missing something still. Will await Skylum's response to my query.

I dunno, Bill. This is what I get when I choose Export from the File menu. Are you on OSX or Windows?

As you can see I can choose a file name, a location and even a resizing option (i've never done that so... dunno how good it is.) lots of options...

[edit] Too weird if the Windows version doesnt have the same variety of options.

I think Bill's issue would be that if he doesn't choose a different file name, then his new one will overwrite (is that the right word) and replace the old original file (which is not what he wants).

But shouldn't he be able to send it to a different folder.

Nope. Windows users get this:

EXPORT.jpg

Which is why I feel a little bit downgraded when you look at LR and I can do this:

LR-EXPORT.jpg

So really, what ends up happening is Luminar becomes a big (file wise and resource wise) Plug-In. Unfortunately, the Light Room integration isn't seamless - what happens is that I open a file in LR and when I invoke Luminar, the file gets moved over to Luminar, but when it's done, it doesn't get sent back to LR as an object file. I have to Import the Luminar edited file explicitly and then subject it to Export and whatever else I need to.

Been experimenting more with the software - although the splash pages for the Windows version only link to *two* available presets (besides the ones in the Pre-Order bundle if you bought them), like any good DIY, I downloaded some that were specifically marked for Macintosh only, and they seem to work - at least they show in the Pre-Sets selector bar and they do *something* when you apply them to a photo. This is the link I used:

New presets | Luminar by Macphun

I see a few by my former Nikonians colleague Dr. Jason O'Dell. Jason's always got good stuff and wrote many excellent guides, so I might drop a few bucks on it. Also the Monochrome stuff is of interest as well.

Well on looking at Armando's post... it seems that is possible in Windows too. If you change the location you dont need to change the file name.

In fact Armando is getting what I get - no option to rename, only to relocate. The contrast with what LR offers (in Armando's post) is illuminating - apologies for the pun.

This is really a deal-breaker for me.
