Leica Anyone here bought the SL

I really hated the look of the SL, I find that the shape is just too ugly. Similar to the Sony which I also did not like.

That said, I am starting to fall in love with the images coming out from that ugly beast. Almost to the point of thinking about switching out of the M to the SL. Gotta go hit my head with a post a few times now to see if I can shake this off.

The kit lens might be big but it sure can produce great image. Leica M lenses also seems to feel right at home with the SL. Hopefully, the camera will be a big flop like the T so that in a year or two, I can pick it up for half the price

I don't mind the looks of the SL one bit. Not deterred by the size either. If the SL lens lineup had a great autofocus 35mm prime as well as one around 85-90mm, I'd be much more tempted. If I were partial to shooting zooms, I would feel differently.

I still say that Leica is playing dumb, pretending not to notice what is so obvious with the T. It's so simple - just look at Leica compact cameras in Leica compact cases - not the old-timey "photographer" cases, but the cases that make a compact camera look spiffy, and a pleasure to carry. I'm extremely irritated that they dropped those cases for the X series, and never provided one for the X Vario or the Q. And if they had one for the T (prime lens, or 28-85 zoom lens) they could have sold a lot more of those cameras. Who in their right mind is going to buy a fashionable botique camera and put it into an old-fashioned "photographer's" case? Nobody. That's a big part of why it's a flop - the fashion department at Leica is completely out of touch with the product planning department.

Most people here probably have a distain for fashion cameras. I don't - I love them, but I don't dress them in peasant attire.

The SL is selling and has more fans all the time. I see very little in common with the Sony A7, which I own. The SL is a gorgeous build, with a film lens friendly sensor. EVF and many other features are state of the art. But it does not shoot M lenses any better than a 240, as far as I can tell. I think for R fans, and there are alot of stellar R lenses, it's manna :)

I think it's going to continue to be a great seller. Even some M shooters will prefer working with an EVF. I've heard several people mention that they like the fact that rangefinder calibration is no longer a concern. I'd love to have one for my M lenses.

i'll tell you this without reservation and as a big fan of leica lenses, if any other camera company came out with a similarly monstrously large mirrorless rig they wouldve been roundly lambasted. imo, that red dot is the photographic equivalent of the ferrari horse, it causes reasonable people to abandon reason. for me, i honestly wouldnt use it if you gave it to me. rather, id sell it to someone who owns a u-haul and put my kids through college! ):

I can't have a camera around my neck, but I can carry it on my shoulder. If someone comes up with a case that exactly fits the camera and default zoom, lens pointed down, I'd start reconsidering it.

I wonder what anyone would use it for. For me it would have to be convenient to carry around, just camera and one lens. I don't expect to ever see one, and I'm in a primary photo city.

dale imo its a studio camera. put it on a tripod, light up the room for that elephantine slow 'pro' zoom, and you can impress your clientele. but to carry around, no, not unless you travel with tenzing norgay.

even 'pointed down' i do believe that class of weapon is banned in many cities. ):

I would only consider it for walking around as I described. With the right case it would be doable, but of course it will never happen, because the geniuses at Leica would never think of giving this customer a break.

Different strokes. My brother travels extensively with his film Hasselblad. Lots of people travel with their D810. Mirrorless isn't just about small size.

It is definitely bigger than existing mirrorless cameras, though. Sort of half way between an M and a typical full frame DSLR.

Here are a couple size comparisons with the Nikon D810, sourced from Camerasize.com:

'mirrorless isnt about small size' is an interesting pov from the creator of 'serious compacts'! :crying: :hmmm::D but yes, at the end of the day it is as you say 'different strokes'. btw, i dont think thats the only af 50 available for nikon--theres a whole bunch about half the size of the posted picture, while there arent any smaller than leicas single offering. and lets not seriously talk about that leica zoom...i have to sit down just thinking about it. when i first saw it i didnt know if it was manufactured by leica or by haliburton. just a little good natured kidding!

The first 2 side-by-sides prejudice the user against the SL. The SL is shown with a fat lens next to the Nikon with no lens. Then viewed from the top, they got a fatter lens for the SL to make it look as big as the Nikon, when the SL would have looked much smaller with each camera equipped with a small prime.

Edit: I wonder if the VF sticking out of the SL body could be removed.

Lol, Steve Huff just characterized me as an anti-Leica troll because I countered an obviously false claim he was making.
