Leica Leica X type 113

ayyaiyai..... Adorama just had the Coolpix A refurbished by Nikon for sale.......299$. I went to the website and it was sold out in a microsecond. Last week $329.

I think I gave mine to someone who works at the local coffee shop. I sold my first A in 2013 or 2014, but at the current low prices it wasn't worth the trouble, so I gave it away to someone who needed a good camera. Samy's would probably have one.

Adorama will sometimes really get down in the dirt on refurbished prices. I bought a D7100 for 379....just so I could use my old manual focus lenses lying around.....instead of the F100. It's amazing how competent the d7100 is. However, it's like a lot of the other DSLR's

$1000 for a nice black one, no brainer - grab it!
Been doing some investigation. X vario seemed to elicit lots of controversy. I thought my paid subscription to. Sean Reid might elicit unbiased evaluation.......although some praise....not sure. X might not fit my style intended for digital.

The X Vario is really an outstanding camera for the really important features - a top quality lens over the whole zoom range, a very nice immediate zoom with the twist barrel, a great sensor, and a very good JPEG engine. But, the f3.5 widest aperture has been problematic even in some daytime shooting on the street, in shadows or alleys etc. The other thing is the weird balance. The M cameras as well as the X1/X2/X-113 etc. have a good balance in the hand, but the X Vario feels like too much weight is in the lens to the front of the camera, so it feels a bit awkward.

It seems that some reviewers and enterprising users are willing to jack up the iso....to offset lens speed. At 90 mm....I think it's f6.4?

The ergonomics.....and handling something else. Thanks

Jacking up ISO increases noise and lowers the resolution of your very expensive Leica camera. That's a very good feature when necessary in low light, but a nuisance in daytime shooting.

The Leica X lens is 2 stops better than X Vario, but X is 35 mm only.

I have the X2 and X Vario. Both are excellent cameras, just wish they'd put the EVF in the camera like the "Q." I enjoy shooting either.

Lens to sensor matching is superb in both. They produce marvelous images.

For a recent trip to Spain, ended up taking a Fuji X-E1 with the 27mm pancake (~ 18mm equivalent field of view). Sharp, compact, great shooting, built-in EVF. Some like the X-E1 sensor over the X-E2. I wouldn't know, but the X-E1 sensor paired with the 27mm is great.

Since the PEN-F came out, I've been having a blast with that matched to the 12-32mm collapsable. Compact, built-in EVF, great equivalent range, superb detail.

For me, the sensor that nothing beats for character is the M9, however. Pair that with the 21mm SEM and a late afternoon sun. Nothing better.

The XE-1 is a camera that came out 4 years ago. It has that X trans sensor and some folks find it problematic and gimmicky. I haven't handled it but when you look at say...the XE1 and the Sony A6000, it is even larger. Is the PEN F more compact than an XE 1? The XE 1 does not seem any more compact than an Oly OMD.

I'd get an A6000 or A6300 if there was a sharp, wide pancake for it, regardless of Sony's clueless UI. Sony's kit collapsable 16-50mm isn't known for it's performance though, just it's convenience. I need both.

The X-E1 went to Spain with me because nothing else I had at the time was sharp and compact, with enough resolution and an EVF. If the PEN-F had been available, for certain that would have gone. If the Leica X2 had a built-in EVF, I would have taken that. Same goes for Coolpix A.

It does seem that for those of us advancing in years, there is a significant premium on having a VF...especially an EVF. While there are several very good Leica models that are compact, they don't have this important feature, not even the much larger x. Since Dale has had an x and currently XU...then maybe he can say how he deals. The smaller x1 series needs some kind of a VF. I gather that you (and everybody else) wants that grail of a larger sensor, compact body, built in EVF, and some how a very low form factor but high quality lens. Perhaps a Panasonic could do in a pinch...but no Leica, no Oly, and no Fuji (of note). I dropped my jaw when I saw the Leica T, also sans built in EVF, with Steve Huff mounting a massive new 35mm lens. How does anyone carry that monster around! I really appreciate the tiny lenses. For now, I keep my Nikon 1 (V1).

speaking of tiny lenses.....the MS Optical M mount lenses are very small. I wonder if anyone has tried a 24, 28, or 35mm version on their digital M's?

Being nearsighted, I can see the little LCDs as well as a movie screen from the third row. If I weren't nearsighted, I'd much prefer reading glasses to attaching an EVF, unless the EVF were really spectacular.

Yes....there was a time when v1 and lens promotion hard to pass up.
Kit lenses mostly plastic. There are enthusiast/pro offerings. The 32 1.2 comes to mind....and a high class long zoom with 800mm reach. You can see my m mount fast fifty glass on Nikon 1 in forum thread .....show your 50's.

I had the X113 and regret selling it (but don't regret the 35 LUX FLE the money went toward).

I will consider buying again before my trip to Asia in December. I currently find myself without any compact camera at all, and like to carry one with whatever serious gear I take so that I can be in some of the pictures or have something unobtrusive and fully automatic for when nobody wants to wait for me to play with cameras and lenses.

The X113 had only one flaw for me and that was the lack of a built-in EVF. The external was very good, but still too bulky and of course, external. The Q would be perfect, except its just more money than I want to spend on a compact, so probably will get another X.

I'm intrigued by the X-U, which is the X but with a ruggedized body for underwater and tough condition photography. Might that be a good fit for your upcoming trip, especially considering your name? :)

I have never done underwater photography and if I did, I wouldn't want to risk an expensive Leica. The X-U costs almost as much as the Q, and still lacks a built-in viewfinder. I would buy a used X113 or perhaps a Sony RX100 series of Leica D-Lux, but the X-U isn't really on my radar at that price point and still APS-C and no EVF.
