Fuji Gariz Shoulder/Gun-Shot Strap Review

Photorx12

Regular
Sorry for the delay, but here is my review as promised. I paid close to $40.00 for this strap, with the intent of having matching accesories. As they promised, the strap does match the case and looks pretty darn good. The leather is very soft and seems like more caution needs to be taken with the strap than the case (but still good quality). The package does not come with directions so it took time to figure out and this was pretty frustrating. The strap does serve double purpose, as a shoulder strap and as a gun-shot strap. You pretty much have to decide which mode you want to use the strap before you leave the house because tiny screws are invloved in the set up and you don't want to lose them and it also takes a lot of time to set up. The major flaw I saw in this whole strap was that the inside of the shoulder pad is nothing but raw leather which can be irritating if wearing a thin shirt. In all it is a nice strap and it does the job and if extended all the way it does reach the hip while in gun-shot mode, but it does have its quirks which may be annoying at times. If you want a starp that looks good and stands out with your case, then this is the strap to get. If you don't like long set ups than you might want to look elsewhere. Durability will be proven with time, it's hard to guess on that.

This is where you separate the strap and can be separated to use as a shoulder strap.
Caution that while in gun-shot mode, this connection shown has to be facing towards you backside in order for the camera to slide smoothly from the hip to the shooting position.

This is the clip, I'm not sure but I think you might be able to buy just this part alone.

This is the inside part of the shoulder pad which can get uncomfortable.

Thanks for the informative review.

Is it possible to attach the hook to one of the rings on the side of the x100 (where the camera strap normally goes through) instead of the Gariz tripod attachment ring?

Thanks for that. Having used a lot of "sling" straps, this looks like a terribly complicated way of getting one to slide. Its fairly attractive, but the Gariz case has both the existing loop and another tripod socket, so more or less any sling strap (home-made or purchased) should be able to work well with it). I'm using my Gariz case (thanks, BTW!) with a couple of different sling solutions at the moment. As nice looking as that leather strap is, all of the retrofitting to get a typical neck strap converted into a sling looks overly complicated to me, after reading the instructions. Although the gunshot piece looks like it would work very well with any fairly narrow strap, whether leather or nylon or whatever.

Yes, it is possible....but as ray stated, it feels better using it the way it was intended for. But the option is there for those that have different preferences. To me the clip gets in the way after you slide it to shooting mode, but when the clip is at the bottom as intended there is nothing that gets in the way.

I've been considering one of the half cases as it's been about 2 months and still no word on the Fuji case here in Seattle. My only thought is, I wish they would have made the case taller...at least up to the silver as it looks it's one size too small.:(

The case is actually perfect length in my opinion, it does not get in the way of the strap and doesn't add an uncorfortable bulk when your hand is on the camera.

Thanks for the photo. Look like I'll be ordering one :)

If its attached to the bottom of the camera, it doesn't have the same impact. Attached to one of the side lugs, though, I agree completely. To me, any sling type of strap works better from the tripod socket because then when you lift the camera, you've got NO straps or buckles or anything to deal with - its all hanging straight down. Anytime I've tried one on either of the strap lugs, even a really minimalist version, it always seems to be in the way of something and always ends up aggravating me. But that's just me.

Me too Ray. I use a strap with quick release lugs. Then I use a wrist strap that attaches to the tripod socket.
No fighting the strap this way. It's a very fast way to change between the two setups.

Neither would an "up to the lugs" modification. It's just visually not quite there and the offset appears to be in direct correlation with the thick baseplate. Almost like they didn't bother to retool the leather dimensions after they came up with their frankly ingenious base design.
