Anyone using, or even considering a move to, 500px?

A friend pointed me to his photo stream on there and it looks pretty darn good. Not sure if how it compares to Flickr and the like, but I'm going to give it a go for some of my more favoured photos.

Anyone care to share their experience with this as an alternative photo 'storage' place?

I started a 500px account a little while back, but I decided that I'm not going to attempt to maintain both it and a Flickr account at the same time. If you are used to Flickr you'll find the user interface is fairly similar. I guess it depends on what you want in a photo sharing site.

I want it to;

- Let me look through my photos easily when I am away from home or to help calm down when I want to tear my hair out at work.
- Have a method to easily find an image through sets, tags or names.
- Find other photogs with similar interests/styles.
- Look through/comment/fave photos from contacts or groups that I am interested in.
- Post an image to a forum, although I don't really do that so much any more.

If you want a bare-bones, free image storage site I would recommend photobucket. For a more community-based site I prefer Flickr. I haven't spent that much time with 500px to see where it fits in between those two. I believe that it was promoted as a community-based site than Flickr but as it gets bigger it will be just as easy to get lost in the crowd as it is on Flickr.

Haven't looked at it yet, but I will. I'm quite comfortable with Flickr and I really like Flickr River for sharing photographs with people who are not Flickr members. Thanks for the heads up!

Also, 500px is the same as Flickr in that it is free up to a certain limit, but then you must pay for the account @ $50 per year which I think makes it twice the price of one of Flickr's (horribly named) "Pro" accounts.

I've been testing it out, pointed a friend at it and he has paid up right away and is using his own domain with it (thats a definite advantage). I like the way its presented, it has more class than some, but I'm still in flickr and redbubble as well. Spreading too thin, methinks.

heres the link to mine, you might get an idea of it from that

500px ? Never heart off before ! I followed Sue's link and it showed up for the first time on my computer.
Hey Sue, my favs are Waiting (beautiful captured in BW) and Crowded Feet !

Thanks Sue, I'll follow you on there. Meanwhile, I've only braved to load one photo on 500px - but here's my account for those that are curious. Duly noted that it would certainly take me many many years to build up the contacts (which took me that long) to gather on flickr. Folks are right though the calibre of photo on there is pretty astounding. Inspiration stuff though....

Following you too. I think its a matter of getting into it. I uploaded 9 shots just to see how a full page would look, and I think its much nicer than flickr which is pretty basic, as is redbubble which ought to have more class to it, but its just got messy, IMO. I cant even navigate my own stuff let alone anyone else's

Anyone else in Redbubble?
Heres my link there: Sue Wotton | RedBubble
You can sell stuff from there but RB takes most so if you are going to, make sure you do a 40-50% markup or you end up with peanuts.

I started an account. It seems a little cleaner, for the moment. I like the way it presents images and info. Time will tell but it's looking good so far.
I'm still the new kid on the block so I haven't explored slot but I will.
I think I have Flickr Burnout Syndrome...

Had a look at it and decided not to bother. It looks nice enough and the price isn't bad but I already have flickr with 5,000 + images so there's no point trying to move over. And I also have smugmug for more presentable images.

The two together are sufficient.

I'd be making the same decision, olli, if I had that many images on flickr, and had a smugmug as well. I'm not sure which way I will go, ultimately. At the moment I am just leaving it lie and will make a decision at some time in the future.

Just had a look at Sue's 500px never heard of it before this am impressed mind you it helps when the pics are great, I've just had a look at 'smgmug' which also looks interesting.
I have just renewed my Flickr account unfortunately but will take a closer look at both sites later.

I thought I might go back and look at 500px since I haven't really touched my account since I opened it a few months ago. I do like that the default image view is larger than Flickr, and that the basic exif info is displayed. As far as I can tell there is no equivalent of a Group like Flickr. I don't know if there are apps available for 500px similar to flickriver, fluidr, flickeflu, etc that remove a lot of the clunkiness from looking through large numbers of images on Flickr. I'm certainly not going to say that you'll find better images on 500px as you'll find great photos on any image hosting site.

If I was starting from scratch I might look a bit more closely into how 500px works, but given that I already have a paid-for Flickr account there is little point in me duplicating it on another site at twice the price.
