Well, don’t know what to think, really

Hall of Famer
Dear fellow photographers, I’m switching back to Olympus and m43 from Fuji. Therefore I’m having my X-T1 on sale on some places. Just got this message (Google translated from Finnish):

“My dear, I'm going to set up a series of neo-helpless family for [name deleted, one of our largest broadcasting companies]. One of the themes is digital insects, including retro digital cameras. This yours camera has good shapes and would fit in a series. The camera probably does not have any technical description value so my assistant can pick it for 120 euros. This same message goes to all the shapes of the camera on sale that support the sculpture purpose, and we hope that the answers will only be for the proposed purchase price.”

For your knowledge pre-owned X-T1 has value for 350-450 Eur in this market.
I’m not sure whether to be irritated or amused.

The Internet lures some characters, for sure. Last weekend I listed my GX85 and 12-60 f/3.5-5.6 on eBay for what I felt was a fair price. I did not select "Make an Offer" as an option. I received two private messages from the same person asking if I'd lower the price. I ignored them both. The next morning, I learned that person had bought the package anyway. I considered just refunding their money and canceling the transaction, as they have 0 feedback, and my spidey sense was tingling. Since PP said they had already paid and they had a confirmed address, I decided to follow through and shipped the package with signature required upon delivery.

This morning I received another message saying they were trying to get Ebay to retroactively apply the 10% off to the transaction, but if EB refused, they asked if I would reprocess the order. As the package is supposed to be delivered today, I told them no.

I'm having a Han Solo moment this morning. Not certain how this is going to end. I was very hesitant about going through EB. Even if the transaction works out fine, I think I'm done with selling on there.

Yes, these fraud messages / candidates are familiar to me. Every time you put something with a bit more value to public trade, these start to flow in. Luckily easy to identify.

I hope your case is already sorted.

There are always lowballers with internet sales.

“Your camera is worth 400. I’m offer 150, you cover paypal and shipping. Send me your paypal info.“

I normally ignore them.

I hope it turns out well Tony!

I won't ever sell on ebay, in spite of potentially getting more for my gear than I would on Gumtree, for exactly situations like this. My fingers are crossed for you for the next umpteen days during which time the buyer can potentially make a claim of broken goods or whatever. Your spidey sense is usually right.

I’ve been selling on eBay for 15 years, and I’ve never had a problem. However in July I sold a Sigma lens for quite a reasonable price. There was absolutely nothing wrong with it. The buyer (a guy in Germany who had decent feedback but only 6 months on eBay) complained about dust in the lens and it being “stainy”. I said he should open a return if he wanted to send it back. He refused, asked me to send postage and suggested I should cancel the order. I didn't want to do that and told him so, even sent him the German language help page with the returns process explained, but he carried on demanding money for postage. I just ignored him, and eventually he opened a Paypal case. Paypal said he could have a refund if he paid to send it back. He closed the case and continues to hound me for postage on eBay. I’ve got all Zen about it now and just ignore his messages as there is nothing he can do and he has no valid complaint. I assume eventually he will give up. But still this has really put me off selling on eBay, and I certainly won’t sell through the GSP again.

In the U.K. the EBay name stinks as a counterfiet selling outlet wouldn’t touch it with a sterilised barge pole.!
There is a lot of rubbish sold on eBay, it’s true, but I wouldn’t say its name stinks. There are many reputable sellers too, for all kinds of stuff. You just have to watch for the signs of sellers from China, they’re the worst.

I am in the UK and buy from ebay probably once every week.
I too have had the odd bad transaction from China but also several from the UK.
On the other hand I also have had some excellent transactions from China and have been able to return faulty goods and get refunded without any trouble with some traders in the UK.
The only constant I experienced is eBay's utter lack of help with any problem.

I would write a meaningless reply and translate it into Swedish.
Jeg ville skrive et meningsløst svar og oversætte det til svensk.

Danish is just Swedish with potatoes in your mouth :p

Obligatory comic for Scandinavians - Language Lesson - Scandinavia and the World :D

Edit: Oh AND I HATE GSP... its doubled the price of fine lenses to get to Australia. Hardly worth looking overseas nowadays :(

My partner buys a lot of bits and pieces from China on eBay, art materials, sewing accessories and suchlike. It's all low value - just 99p here or £2.50 there, including postage. And it all turns up (usually after a month or so) and she's never had any problems that I recall. Where we've come unstuck is on larger and heavier items bought in the UK, which have become damaged in transit due to inadequate packaging.

There must be an enormous amount of low-value packages being sent out from China if our buying habits are typical.

I wasn't criticising China at all I have in the past ordered bits and pieces from china with no problems but via Amazon, just the crooks that operate on Ebay who sell fake goods! Of which there seems to be a lot of!

Thanks folks. Tracking indicates the package was signed for at the delivery address yesterday. I just have to trust it will be fine and not worry about it.
