News Flickr changes

I like flickr and I have a pro account, which I've had for years

I'm a little pis erm annoyed that I thought I was on a life time tariff, but apparently I'm not.

I'm also aggrieved that I can renew pro now and get a 30% discount, but I only have until Nov30th.

But my pro renewal isn't due until April, so why would I waste 5 months of something I've already paid for...

....I'm a little concerned about the changes to explore too

current explore works on some secret algorithm that means someone with only a few followers has as much chance of getting in as someone with 1000s of followers

This is quite unique in the modern social media sphere where usually the more interest something is gathering, then the more at the top of feeds it appears

I'll be disappointed if they break this

Marissa Mayer did that a few years ago, back in 2013: "There’s no such thing as Flickr Pro today because [with so many people taking photographs] there’s really no such thing as professional photographers anymore."
I was looking for that announcement earlier, because I do think it is kind of funny now looking back.

It showed a deep misunderstanding of photography in general and of photographers in particular.

Remember the first revamp of Flickr? Jumbles of images presented cheek by jowl without space to breathe? The Ken Burns effect everywhere?

Yahoo and Mayer in particular broke Flickr like a toddler grabbing at a butterfly. It never recovered and it never will.

I can't believe she said that, I knew her time at Yahoo didn't yield much success, or any, and now I know why.

Found this info this morning.....

If you'd like to download all of your photos, including all of your data, go to your Flickr account settings and select Request My Flickr Data on the bottom right of the page.

I have initiated the procedure. Seems like it will take awhile and when the download is ready (presumably some sort of zip file), flickr will contact me. I'll update when I know more. This is certainly easier than looking to see where all these photos are.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention Luke. I’ve also started the procedure.
I might take the time to manually download a copy of them all as well.
Before I proceed with however Flickr supplies my data.
Just in case.
I’ve been looking at other sites to use in the future. 500px is top of my list at the moment.

Instagram and facebook. I won't be going Pro.
I also believe my Instagram feed will get more content in future. So far I’ve used IG only for mobile (iPhone 6) snaps but when getting rid off Flickr I’m going to utilise it more.

I haven’t used Flickr so much anyways and just kept it. But now there’s a reason to skip it for good.

I've been selective in uploading to Flickr — 13 years, 265 pictures. This is about 1% of all of my pictures, all of which are stored locally. The Flickr pics are the few that I consider worthy of public exposure which don’t include people (mostly my family). I have a while to go to reach 1000 and when I do, I’ll continue to prune my set.

Deleted my Pro account 3 years ago, removed all the pictures.
Did the same with Google Photo (or whatever it is/was called), Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, Tumblr, Whatsapp...
I selectively post some of my less personal pictures on this Forum and NikonCafe and that's it.
I am not entirely convinced that the world is interested in my rather statistically insignificant life and I have other more secure private ways to share these with people who matter.
So being asked to pay for these services is not a great proposition for me.
Then again, it might be attractive and useful to many and Flickr's new owners may simply be trying to target a profitable customer base.

Pinterest might be another option. I think it would be better than instagram and facebook given its features which are little more closely aligned with Flickr.
Not for me. Tried Pinterest a while back, i just didnt bond with it. Actually given than I only post here occasionally, and on Pentax forums occasionally, and ditto fb and insta, I may just not bother with anything. Cant bring myself to delete the lot from flickr though.

Does anyone have any experience with Amazon Photos? It's part of the Prime package, so I imagine would be widely available to forum members.
Oh thanks for the reminder. I joined Prime a few months ago, and forgot about this.

[edit] Just checked it out. Dont know what the deal is for US members, but AU members only get 5GB, for any storage. The Plans are ridiculously expensive. $24 for 100GB, it would be cheaper to take own hosting and DIY, or go with Zenfolio or Smugmug which whilst costing more, are unlimited.

For sharing photos on forums I'm not sure if Amazon Photos will be as easy. I'm trying right now and while it gives a link that others can bring up in their browser I'm not finding a link to allow for embedding it remotely.

In the UK we get 5GB for anything BUT photos. Photos are unlimited (with Prime).
I see this as further bait in typical Amazon style.
Unlimited and free while in ramp up phase, enticing if in the Amazon Ecosystem, great to share with family and possibly across Amazon devices.
Then will be segmented and costly, like Prime which now excludes Fresh Goods.
Or Prime Video which excludes the Amazon channels...

Not for me.

Flickr have just sent me my data in 13 zip files. Downloading now. About 5 hours to go.

Several of the zip files are downloaded. I’ve been picking files at random and surprisingly a lot of my favourites turned out to be taken on smaller sensors. The Nikon V1 files for instance. Especially in mono. It really does make me want to give that gear another try.
