Nice - love my K-1. Which lens did you use? The 28-105?

Nice. I wanted a K1 until I realised how heavy it is. My poor old hands and wrists would not cope.

I'm a big proponent of people using what works best for them, regardless of brand. I've tried smaller and lighter, and quickly realized the cramped controls and tiny grip areas were the source of my pains. Despite the weight, my K-1 is the least painful camera I've used in years, it fits my hand like it was designed just for me. We have so many good choices for camera gear these days. :)

IMHO the 28-105 is a good value, solid for a general purpose "kit" lens. I keep mine to use in bad weather, to cover the range of my non-WR FA primes.

Do you have anything in mind yet for a new lens?

Contemplating the KP to replace my K5. Its even lighter than than the K5. Not full frame but... meh.

Confession: I was also contemplating the KP...not to replace my (recently acquired and 'new' to me) K200D - but rather to supplement it because a) I love Pentax glass, b) I've shot with Pentaxes for decades and decades and have a fondness for their design, their build quality, their lenses and their general intelligent quirkiness, and c) because I think it's one of the coolest APS-C camera designs ever (no, let me amend that: not 'one of' the coolest, but THE coolest). But I can't afford their present prices and since I don't live in Australia, I couldn't really take advantage of the new discounted price which Pentax Australia is on the verge of offering. So...I more or less put the whole thing on mental hold...until I discovered a lightly used demo KP on sale by a large and reputable photo store here in the States. And---

It's winging its way towards me even as we speak :) or, rather, it's trucking its way (ground postage is cheaper) across the country to the remote part of Oregon where I live.

I hope it lives up to its reputation...as a worthy little brother (or sister) to the K-1. Which, coming back to the original postings in this thread, is from all accounts a serious and very very fine photographic tool.

I keep looking at the discounted KP, $AU999 for a Silver (they sold out of black) but for some reason I don't pull the trigger. I keep resisting my own GAS. Apart from that 35mm and the DA50mm a few months (or was it a year ago) I havent bought any new gear for nearly 3 years.

[edit] just looked again... sold out. I imagine the new stock coming in December will be back to normal price. He (or she) who hesitates, etc.

Coming back to the original focus of this thread - the K-1 - I'm assuming most of you know of - or have read - Kirk Tuck's recent posts (on his Visual Science Lab photography blog) about the used K-1 he recently acquired .... and all the fun he's been having shooting with it, lately? If you haven't, they are worth reading, if for no other reason than that Kirk is a fine, engaging and always entertaining writer. Some time ago he switched his professional work to using Fujifilm Cameras (this after a long and extended period where he was shooting with Panasonic GH5's) and he often writes eloquently of the myriad reasons which Fuji's camera bodies - and lenses - make a wonderful system which is more than suited to the many varieties and flavors of professional photography that he does. But---

But he is also, first and foremost, a photographer - and has never been blindly brand-loyal to one specific manufacturer - which makes his series of recent posts on the K-1 all the more entertaining. To paraphrase a lot of his eloquent words, he finds the K-1 (which he like so much that he bought two of them) a solid well-designed dinosaur-like old school camera which lends itself to the kind of old school photography which, at times, he has always loved and often done. His observations on the capabilities of the K-1 make for some pretty damn fun reading.

Most of the positives and superlative he characterizes the K-1 with...pretty much trickle down to its baby APS-C sibling, the KP....which I have been enjoying for similar, though not always identical, reasons to the ones Kirk speaks of with regards to his K-1's. But, yeah, it would be fun to try one out.... (and according to Kirk, with price reductions, they are getting to be a bit of a full-frame bargain, lately grin )

I enjoy reading people who aren't over-burdened with brand loyalty. The K-1 is a really good camera IMHO. Not what everyone wants, and not the greatest choice for some types of photography, but it is a solid performer when used accordingly.
