An early review of Luminar 3 with Libraries

Yes, he reviews a pre-release version, but after reading the bad and the ugly, I'm not at all sure I will upgrade. YMMV.
The New Luminar 3 with Libraries - the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly - Matt Suess Photography
I actually just bought Luminar a few days ago in anticipation of the Luminar 3 release with the idea of using it in lieu of an Adobe LR CC subscription. I'm a (very) casual user so with the added file management I'm thinking of it as a possible replacement for LR CC & Bridge.

By any chance did you happen to see what meta tag info is exposed? Luminar 2018 is a tad lacking in that ability, at least that I can find, so I'm finding myself using Bridge and other tools to view the meta data for testing stuff.

No, didnt notice, but I think he commented about its lack in his "ugly" or "bad" section. There's lots that should be there, that isnt. I'm losing faith in Skylum. The cost of upgrading every year is ridiculous. Sure, you can use what you have forever, but if you want more, you have to buy more. (I bet they already know how to get metadata exposed/included but will keep that for a future upgrade.) It may as well be a subscription, IMO. I like editing in Luminar, and can make do with Photos as the manager. I could even backtrack to iPhoto.

I find Skylum one of the better companies when it comes to upgrades and pricing. If you own 2018 the upgrade to library version is free. The AI Sky filter was free and the upgrade to 2019 is also promised to be free. Basic cost for new customers is $69 and a $10 discount is readily available. Compared to Adobe CC you would get about 6 months for $59.

I also read the review posted by Sue and agree the DAM it is minimal at this stage but I expect will grow and improve.

BTW does anyone know if Ratings and Keywords translate from one software to another eg LR to On1?

I may have broken it. :( I went to import a folder in my library and forgot that it was a folder also containing some backups to the size of 45 gigs or so, now Luminar 3 is hung and after a reboot it's unresponsive once the logo screen comes up. I suspect it may be trying to run the import task yet and is either getting hung up or the import size giving it issues.

@Kevin I’ve found Skylum suport very helpful in the past. You may need to ask them for help.
I'm trying a re-install first. One annoyance is that for Windows the Luminar 3 installer is a stub so that re-installing it means download everything all over again over the network. When I get home I have to check but I thought Luminar 2018 wasn't a stub but the full local install version.

Isn’t the rest of the install code cached in a temp directory or something?

That answer seems to be a big "no", for now at least.

Review: Luminar 3 with Libraries -- The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

No keywords, no captions, no .xmp file support, no IPTC, no geo-tags, no versions or stacks, no smart albums, etc. This isn’t fun. When you import your files, the only info that gets brought in is camera metadata. If you have keywords or star ratings or anything else either embedded in your file or stored in an .xmp sidecar file Luminar 3 won’t see it. This means you are starting all over with your catalog organization and it could be a deal-breaker for a bunch of photographers. In addition, if you export a file to Photoshop, your star rating doesn’t get sent with the file. A lot of this is basic photo catalog management and it is quite disappointing to not see any of this yet in this first release.

Yeah, I wasn't very encouraged by that. Skylum does tend to hold back on various "features" which are standard in other apps, for later upgrades. We expected the Libraries last year (in 2017) but it didnt happen and they have made us wait til now. I suspect the only reason that we are getting a free run on next year is that there would have been an outcry about being made to wait longer and longer for the libraries. It would be poor form to expect us to pay for an upgrade after that.

Theres a LOT to like about editing in Luminar and Aurora (whichever version) but for full features... nope. I may well revert to OnOne

Fortunately I'm just starting to play around with Luminar 3, and Luminar in general, and since L3 installs side-by-side with L2018 anything I did in L3 didn't affect my L2018 install. With that in mind I ended up deleting the "Luminar Catalog" in my Pictures folder (the default install location on Win machines) and that took care of it. During a Facebook presentation tonight a Skylum rep mentioned that for "performance reasons" it is best to add images in small batches to the Library so I'm guessing that me accidentally trying to add a 50gb folder was a bit too much for it. :D

On a bit of a downer both of my questions during the live chat were seemingly ignored. I wanted to know if their road map plans included being able to view the full meta tags, similar to Adobe Bridge. No answer but they did answer somebody asking if the ability to edit EXIF tags like Copyright & similar will be coming. Yes to that question. I also wanted to know if the feature set was the same between the Mac & Win versions. No answer to that one and I'm not sure if I've seen that particular question addressed anywhere.

How did you get Luminar 3, Kevin? Is it a beta?
