Announcement Welcome to Cameraderie 2.0 - Feb. 2019 Updates

Kevin

Code Monkey 🐒
Folks, we finally did it, we upgraded from XenForo 1.5.x to the new & shiny XenForo 2.1.0 forum software. 😎

In the days ahead we'll be writing up detailed posts about some of the new site features now available. Here's a list of some of the things for you to check out and explore...
  • New native emoji support! Instead of being limited to just the pre-defined list of "smilies" you can now use emoji straight from your phone or other device. 🤘
  • New native push notifications! You can now get 'push' notifications sent straight to your device, a perfect way to keep up with your Cameraderie alerts. Unfortunately they are not available to iOS device users nor Safari on MacOS users. That's an Apple decision to not support the feature, not ours. Everybody else though you should be seeing a notice in the footer asking if you want to enable them.
  • New bookmarks! If you find an interesting item, instead of just 'watching' the thread you can now bookmark it! Just look for the little bookmark icon to add it to your collection.
  • New reactions! Instead of relying upon a 3rd-party addon being able to choose a 'reaction' when you hover over the 'Like' link is now a stock feature. Don't worry, everybody's old 'post ratings' have been converted over to the new reactions.
  • New link previews! When you post a link now in a post the site will try to automatically retrieve information about the link and insert it into your post. Just post the link on a line by itself and the system will try to get the info.
  • Updated editor options! You can now do stuff like image alignment, alt text, and, for anybody familiar with it, markdown code.
  • Table support! Yep, tables are now supported.
    MovieYear
    Buckaroo Banzai1984
    Doc Savage1975
  • Inline spoilers! Want to sort-of hide something? Try the inline spoiler command to blur text that is only revealed when clicked on. In The Sixth Sense, the character of Bruce Will is .... you thought I was going to really give the spoiler, didn't you!.
  • New front page! It is now a much easier process for the moderators to "feature" an image on the front page and as settle in to the new software it'll be easier to add additional stuff to the front page as well.
  • Expanded EXIF logic! When viewing the EXIF data below an attachment the logic to display the Make / Model / Lens has been expanded. Now if the data is in a tag somewhere in the image we should be able to display it. Be sure to post if you think there is any other EXIF data that might be a good idea display and if you have any images with odd data that you think we aren't displaying the right values.
Now since it was a pretty big upgrade, we went straight from XF 1.5.x to 2.1.x skipping over the XF 2.0.x release, there are a bunch of other things that were added in the XF 2.0.x release like navigation changes, additional support for embedded media, and the revised "What's New" page, so be sure to poke around and see what is different & new. Behind-the-scenes there are also a huge amount of changes to help the site run smoother but we won't bore you with those.

There are a few items that need to be resolved yet and we're working on them. Some of the bigger known issues at the moment include...
  • On iOS devices the "Featured" image previews on the front page are not aligned. [fixed]
  • The ability to insert one of your own attachments from a prior post into a new post needs to be done yet.
  • Feedback regarding the new styles has been... diverse :cautious: ... and some tweaking to them is likely going to be an ongoing thing. Some changes are just a matter of getting used to the new design & layout but other things that have been pointed out will go on the To Do list.
Some smaller things include...
  • Ads have not been added back yet. They'll show up again at some point for non-subscribers but this week they are really low on the priority list.
  • The option to not display EXIF data when viewing attachments needs to be put back in place. [fixed]
Thank you for being understanding while the construction process is underway. The big items are done, now we just need to continue going forward.

If you notice anything or have any questions, feel free to post. Good or bad, your feedback is always welcome. 👍

Had some time this Saturday night to work on this one and the option to disable viewing the EXIF data for attachments in the forums has been restored.

If you were seeing the EXIF data this past week and are suddenly no longer seeing, make sure you don't have the option in your Preferences settings set to "No". There are 9 Cameraderie members who have the option turned off so if it was by mistake, just change the setting to either "Yes" to explicitly turn on viewing the EXIF data or choose the "No selection" option to use the default behavior (which, at the moment, is to show the data).

If you do see the EXIF data in the forums but don't want to, then change option to "No" in your preferences.

Hi, and thanks for your efforts to make the forum more attractive and useful. I would like to see the Mark All Forums Read option available on the opening page, as it was in the past. Having to click on Forums and then Mark Read is just another unneeded step.

Merlin, by "front page" do you mean the menu bar? I'm taking a look at the old site now and the buttons that were only on the front page were "Unread Posts" & "Recent Posts" at the bottom of the page and there was a "Post New Thread" button at the top of the page.

There was an expandable drop-down menu button on the top of the front page (a bit right of center, IIRC), and one of the choices was Mark All Posts Read (or seomething to that effect).

Merlin, does clicking on "Mark All Forums Read" not do what you are trying to do?

Yes, it works correctly, but I was hoping for this option on the front page. As it now stands, I need to click on Forums, and then Mark All Forums Read (and then confirm my choice, which I hate!), which was not the case formerly. In any event, not a big deal.

I am seeing the same -- Firefox on Ubuntu Linux 18.04.
This is what I am seeing on my Windows laptop using Firefox.
Well, that was bizarre.... I changed the conditional from !$xf.visitor.Profile.custom_fields.recentdiscussions == "No" to $xf.visitor.Profile.custom_fields.recentdiscussions != "No" and it all of sudden started working but both conditionals are valid. Anybody who had the option explicitly set to "Yes" was not seeing it, anybody who did not specify the option was seeing it. On the test site I'll need to experiment a bit to see if there is a bug with the conditionals that I should report to the developers.

I can add a button easily enough on the front page but that confirmation is something that happens at the software level and is out of my control. Are you sure it wasn't prompting you before when you clicked it? I'm trying the "Mark Forums Read" link on copy of the old site and the difference is that before clicking the link takes me to a different page asking me if I'm sure while after the upgrade the prompt is a modal pop-up box instead of a new page.

I split off the iOS editor issues into a new feedback thread since the problem is a bug (either with XF or iOS) independent of the recent updates...

Hi @Kevin , I think this has been mentioned but I can’t find the post to comment...clicking the post links in the side bar takes you to the first post in the thread, which is a bit of a pain. Can that be changed to go to the most recent post?

hmmmm, that's odd. I noticed that the other day. But today when I click the links in the recent posts sidebar, it takes me to the most recent post.

Maybe that's because I marked all forums read yesterday. It could be taking you to the most recent post "that you haven't read"?

The way the software works should be the same as it was before... clicking on the link where you have unread posts should take you to the first unread post but clicking on a link with no unread posts will take you to the first post in the thread.

That should be how it's working, it should be taking you to the first post that it thinks you haven't read yet. It's possible that when the software was upgraded and the cookies cleared that it reset the counters for some but that's a theory I'll need to verify.
