Hi folks, this is the first SiJy 2019 image thread, I'll start a thread every night for the next day till the end of July. Here's my first photo for SiJy 2019, taken today.

I wanted to try doing some product photography over a year ago and this is my first try, apparently flawed in many ways but SiJy is exactly what I needed to get out of the comfort zone.

Now the thread is yours.

Cheers

Here we go, first up... this old advert on a shed has been here for donkey's years. I don't think Dr Morse's Indian Root has been sold for at least 8 decades, but they keep restoring the ad so people like me can come and take photographs. Its on the road to Morpeth, a small town (outside Maitland, NSW,) which has some historical significance, being largely convict built originally, but which now is a town for tourists. I may get out there again for photos of the town itself. I've had to abandon the notion of the TZ90 as explained in the who's in thread. Its going to be interesting.

Day 01
A view some of you will have seen before in Single In. I just found it to be a very fitting start of the new series, since Divided will be my theme this time. Again, my workflow will be mobile on my iPhone 7 Plus, using a Lightning SD card reader, RAW editing in Adobe Lightroom on iOS and mobile uploads to Smugmug.

I've decided that. given the limited dynamic range of the sensor in the GF1, images are best shot early in the morning or late in the afternoon to reduce the dynamic range of the scene. To borrow part of a quote from Ansel Adams this mornings early shot was "a sharp image of a fuzzy concept" so it was back to the drawing board. Salvation came in the form of a farm contractor who arrived just after lunch to bale a field I can see from my cottage. The cottage is to the left of the barn in the far distance on the right of the image below. A walk through the woods in the picture and a doubling back bought me to the field being baled and just in the nick of time. This was the second to last bale before the field was finished (it's rather a small field). I was lucky, since he's baling up and down the slope he has to jack knife the baler before discharging the bale so it lies end on to the slope and doesn't run away down the slope. He jack knifed my way. Likewise it had clouded over reducing the dynamic range of the scene. I had to use some digital graduated filter in post processing to recover detail in the sky. Given I'm using a wide angle lens it would have been preferable to be nearer the baler, but no contractor in his right mind would discharge the bale with me being "dramatically close" to the action. Likewise there wasn't time to get into position to get a bale in the near foreground. At least I caught the moment. Perhaps the wrong lens for the subject, or the wrong position, but needs must and I'm not too disasatisfied with the result so that's what counts.

I took the decision to not crop the image, the foreground is in focus and I think it sets the scene in context quite well.

@jyc860923 Not flawed IMHO. While not a "for sale" like product shot, it's too dark to see any flaws, it could certainly be a catalogue shot.
It's due to the web size really. The first flaw, I didn't clean the camera properly, there are dusts everywhere, but this is a fault with the product really.

Another flaw, since I didn't actually set up multiple light sources but rather painted in the highlights in different layers, I wasn't aware when shooting that the highlights on the "shoulder" and "forehead" are blown out, so I basically don't have any control over these areas, you can tell I wanted the shoulder dimmer than the forehead, I painted in the shoulder area slightly but it's clipping lacking texture and colour information, the forehead is supposed to be bright, but again, with texture and colour information which there isn't.

And you're right it's too dark, because the background wasn't perfect. I couldn't show it as much as I want.

I quite agree since I am a big fan of contextual images. Thanks for adding your train of thoughts. As always, that’s insightful. Furthermore as always, great tones again.

Marlof, that sounds very convoluted and way over my head, but the best of luck with the technology. Another interesting concept that you have set yourself, I look forward to the results over the next 30 days.
