Fuji X-E1 sensor vs the rest

Out Of Nowhere
I guess this would also apply to the X-Pro1 sensor. In different fuji groups on Facebook and other outlets around the web. A lot of people seem to swear by the X-E1 sensor and the images it produces. Liking it far better than any of the other sensors in the Fuji X system. Which has me considering grabbing a X-E1 to try out with portraits. I know Adam has gone in depth showing the differences between the X-Pro1 and Pro2. Does anyone else feel the same about the sensors?

I’m not much of a pixel peeper either. But I figured it could not hurt to ask. There was a slight chance it was like how a lot people still love the images from the original canon 5D because of the sensor.

I’m a bit sad - I do notice the difference. I certainly notice the CCD/ CMOS difference but worse than that I even notice the difference between earlier and current CMOS sensors. For me, the older sensors seem to produce nicer images, which my wallet thanks me for. And that goes for Fuji too. A coupe of examples: the files produced by the Fuji 35mm F1.4 on an X-E3 could not match how nice the files were coming out of an X-T1 and whilst the GRIII is a better and more powerful camera, the images that came out of the GRII were nicer.

Maybe the sad truth is that I like the new sensor a little better. We all like different things in an image and I never really compared images side by side. I just saw nothing “special” to my eye coming out of the XPro1 or, for that matter, the XT10 which I used far more. At least nothing that I wouldn’t trade for more resolution or less high iso noise. The good news is those old cameras are still out there, and I bet there are a lot of XT10 out there as well.

I can't really say if I like one sensor over the other, to be honest. I will say that I prefer the AF and system speed of the XE3 over the XE1. I owned the XE1 for a long time and tolerated the sluggishness of it because i appreciated so much of it for so long.

I'll just throw my Flickr albums out there for you and you can decide if you notice a difference in the output or not.

I will also add that I appreciate the film simulation experience of the newer cameras over the older...but I think that the B&W conversions of the XE1 I slightly prefer (meaning the post processing of the JPG in Lightroom). I like being able to get the B&W I want SOOC now in the XE3.

It's hard to say. I like the photos better in the XE1 album than the XE3 one although I can't tell if that's the sensor or the subjects. I do prefer the B&W in the XE1 sensor but again its hard to tell if it's the sensor.

I was about 50/50 between the two albums. Which tells me its probably not worth buying a X-E1 to experiment with.

In a funny small world moment. You took a photo of my good friend Dana at the Ren Faire.

That is an awesome small world moment! :)

The XE1 was one my longest running camera bodies. Loved the images.
If I had to state a difference between it and the XE3 I’d say that the newer sensor is cleaner, maybe more sterile? That said, the responsiveness of the XE1 is something to be experienced. ( ;

For studio portraits I think it’d be fine. Or landscapes or macros. Events? no. And honestly I do think you’d see a difference Bobby. Might be a fun project.

I'm not much of a jpeg shooter(yet) and am discovering the immense joy of blown highlights. I also haven't had much patience with C1's X-trans1.raf conversion so I downloaded RNI Film's demo pack.
This is Portra 400. First attempt - I like it.
