Interesting catch - I'll very much like to know what you think about the lens (yes, I've noticed the Df ;)). I almost bought it a couple of times to have a lighter alternative to my almight Sigma 24-105mm f/4 Art (which is a really good, but also really bulky lens in every respect).

M.
It's huge, bulky, heavy, plasticky, slow... oh wait, I'm comparing it to Leica M lenses!

My first DSLR lens in a while, literally zero comparisons to be made at this point. :)

I'll walk with it today and see how it goes.

I might say it's nice at 24, really soft at 85. And I quite fear that the softness begins around 70 mm or earlier. I made some comparisons against another kit zoom, will be collecting my findings in a post.

Have you tried just shooting center AF and single shot AF, just to confirm it's the lens and not the camera? I'd also use live view to create a baseline for sharpness, since LV uses CDAF for focusing. I use this method when I AF fine tune my lenses so I can determine my adjustments.

Yes, I'm still learning the camera so my technique might cause my findings. But so far I've shot S-AF and center point.

Will check LV too, thanks for the tip! (y)

Here some 100% crops, all focused using center point S-AF. Admittedly the shutter speeds are within the range of 60-100 of a second but I did have the VR on.

All f/7.1

Those look really soft. I've owned the 24-85mm VR and that lens should be decently sharp at f/5.6. I'd try shooting with VR turned off and I'd double check to make sure you're not accidentally touching the MF focus ring. I'd also try manual focusing at the same focal length. If both methods still yield soft photos, either the lens is faulty or the camera isn't focusing properly. BTW - when you received the camera, did you try resetting all the settings to factory default? It's possible the camera might have settings that could interfere with operation. It's highly unlikely, but it's always good to start from factory settings to establish a proper baseline.

Thank you for input. "New" to DSLR lenses so I don't really know what to expect.

I've reseted the camera as much as it can be reset... Just today I learned that Nikon cameras can't really be reset to factory defaults unless you want to stash them into dark boxes without battery for 2 weeks. 👀

But I in particular did check earlier today that AF FINE TUNE settings are all reset at zero.

In tomorrow's light I'll conduct sharp tests with LV.

I had the newer version of the 24-85 as well, and used it a little on the Df while I had it. Not my sharpest lens, but it wasn't bad. I'll drop some examples for you in the Nikon forum.

Well looks like there's another camera on the way...:coco:

I am quite happy with the pictures from my D3200 but wanted a little more ease of handling manual focus and AF/AF-D type autofocus lenses as well as two dials for use in manual mode. It and the D7200 are the best two DX bodies Nikon made (with the newest D7500 being a down grade) and for me the slightly older and significantly cheaper D7100 is the better value.

I'll keep 'em both! :drinks:

After much deliberation I ordered the EM1 Mark III, moving up from the original Mark I I’ve used for about 5 years in my larger weathersealed system with zoom pro lenses (12-40 / 40-150 ) and one amazing pro prime ( 25 ). For fun, I use the Pen-F with small primes in a small bag.

Relatively speaking the EM1.3 might not be the best deal around and I was considering several alternative systems (Nikon, Sony, Fuji), but decided I would miss my current lenses too much. It is my larger system but still very manageable during my hikes, when I do most of my photography. Going through my images from the last couple of years, I really can’t fault my system for my type of photography. So getting a new body to get at least several more years out of these lenses I enjoy so much made sense.

Now the waiting has begun.

For this uninitiated old codger, please explain?
It screws into the camera's viewfinder and magnifies the center portion of the view to help focus more accurately.

It will also help composing the pictures as 135mm crops awfully much into the frame, leaving a very small rectangle.

I'm looking to get a 90 and a 135 mm lenses for M so I thought this might be a fun thing to try.

I ordered the EM1 Mark III

As you can see in the April 2020 Challenge, it has arrived. On my v1 I had a cheap form fitting L-plate of which I left the bottom part always attached, offering a resting place for my right pink. The cheap version for the mark III was not very form fitting and wobbly. So RRS to the rescue. Their L-plate (for Mark II and III) fits perfectly, but my wallet is in mourning.

This loupe is nice. It magnifies the .68x viewfinder of M-P 240 into a 1x one. Now that the eyepiece sticks out from the camera I don't have trouble seeing the 50 mm framelines. The information is also easily seen by a tiny adjustment.

I have two new to me lenses on the way:

first a wide angle - 20mm that is 30mm equivalent on my DX cameras

And then an example of the classic Nikkor portrait lens, a 105mm f/2.5 in the older Sonnar formulation. It'll turn around right away once it gets here to go to Jon White's AIConversion and then it'll be the long end (157.5mm equivalent) in my bag.

Well I already had the O17mm f/1.8 and P12-32 f/3.5-5.6 but......

I suspect I'll keep 2 of the 4 and I think I know which two, but time will tell.

I got the P14 because I really enjoyed my X70, so it gives me something very similar. A fixed 28mm eq that can focus pretty close. It's bigger and heavier (and can be more complicated); but has faster AF and IBIS. And while the Pen F + 12-32 fit into my little NG1153 bag it's not as enjoyable. Yes it's convenient, but not as fun. This will probably be my new EDC, the NG1153 fits in the center console in my car so it's handy.

The PL15 I've owned it before, but always sold it on. In the past I've tended to prefer the 17mm focal length, but again I've enjoyed the X70. I've also been using the PL25 more and enjoying the way it renders on the Pen F. Maybe the third time will be the charm.
