Fuji has announced the Fuji X10 compact, a "baby brother" to the X100 with the following key specifications:
  • 12MP 2/3" sensor (largest of the sensor sizes smaller than 4/3")
  • 28-112mm equivalent f/2.0-2.8 lens
  • Mechanically-linked zoom
  • Optical image stabilization
  • Optical viewfinder with 85% coverage
  • Magnesium body construction
  • Full 1080P video with stereo sound

Other small sensor compacts with zoom lenses that are fast throughout the range include the Olympus XZ1, Samsung EX1/TL500, and Panasonic LX5. Compared to those, only the Fuji has a mechanically-linked zoom ring and optical viewfinder. The looks, construction, feel, and controls will also likely set it apart, and I wouldn't discount the possibility that the 2/3" sensor could be something special.

Update**: Adorama is now taking pre orders: 16190089 Fujifilm Finepix X10 Digital Camera, 12 Megapixels,28 - 112mm F2-2.8 Lens

It does indeed. I might get confused and grab "the right" one.:D I'm going to control myself...but then it is important to help the economy...will this help The Economy?

Seriously, it does look good. Very tempting!

They made it black so you will be able to tell at a glance which one you are grabbing, and it will help the economy!

I want one too .

Honestly, with the exchange rates I might save some money if I did have my offspring buy it for me...but I should not start going down this road... I must remember that the camera I have with me is the best camera!

P.S. I must sign off now and remind myself that I can't afford this.:alcoholic:

Everything looks good, but an OVF? I've seen those on some of the older Canon G series cameras, and they are pretty useless. It looks like a great camera, though. Depending on ISO performance, this camera should perform similarly to a mFT camera with the slow kit lens.

Yes, Sue after reading the Fuji site on the X10 and seeing the video, this all Glass quality OVF will be great. Its 85% coverage will be ok as this keeps the size down for the camera as a whole.
I have been waiting for a camera like this in this size configuration since I sold my M6 Leica film camera. I love the mechanical Zoom control and on/off trigger of the lens ring, what a great feature, and will be quick as a wink, no button pressing.
I really love everything about this X10 and will order one if the image quality is there and the focusing is accurate.

Finally a small beautifully Designed compact camera. Just love the DESIGN.

Oh, Did I mention I like the design.??
Dennis.

I'm looking forward to trying it out. I'm guessing the OVF will be a lot better than the Canon G OVFs but much worse than even the tunneliest of small DSLR OVFs. Also, as it isn't through the lens, parallax will be an issue.

Dennis, I love the design too, and the on/off zoom ring is simple and brilliant:

Yes Amin, on the parallax condition, but you get used to this as you get familiar with the camera, by shooting a lot. It took a while for me to get used to the M6 as all the mechanical rangefinders have the parallax conditions.

For street shooting no problem and most landscape shooting no problem, shooting wider than the 50mm setting, the parallax condition becomes a greater concern, for accurate framing, so in these situations you can always use the lcd to compose for 100% accuracy, if needed.

I suppose in the next gen. of the x10 fuji will just move to the EVF. But I really like the Glass Viewfinder, simple clear and bright like our eyes.
I think we will be surprised by how good this Fuji OVF will be.
Dennis.

this OVF

So it won't quite be like the one we have on our X100s, it seems. On the X100 it is superb, if I might say it is what the Leica X1 could have had, in my easy to type opinion.

*Finally watched the video. Someone asked in the comments on YouTube as to what, if any, information there might be as one looks through the OVF. It would be great if they f/stop and shutter speeds were in there. Not sure it that is asking for too much of a mini me of the X100, or not.

These new compact cams now and on the horizon really do remind me of the old film cameras..the Oly ZX is similar in looks to the film OLy's I have owned.
This new Fuji X10 with its built in VF is in a similar vein also, the trend towards cams with OVF's in both fixed lens compacts and like the new Sony NEX 7 CSC seems to be the way forward and other manufactures are going to have to follow ...if they can!

This is definitely a promising addition to the Fuji line and tells me they're listening to what serious shooters really want in a camera. The one thing I'm concerned about is the VF. I wonder if it provides any kind of information as to where the camera has focused. I don't care much about aperture/shutter speed information, but I would like to know where the camera is focused in AF or Manual mode. Otherwise, I'd rather just use the screen which defeats the purpose of the viewfinder entirely.

Otherwise, this is a rock-star of a camera and will definitely give the G-series and LX/DLUX cameras a run for their money.

OK, since it's a well known fact that I am mathematically challenged, unless we're talking addition and subtraction, would one of you kindly explain to me how this camera with its sensor size will translate the lens's zoom? For example let's compare this to the LX5 or the latest D-Lux?

I've just found Fuji's "special" site: HOME | FUJIFILM X10 and will see if I learn something more about the OVF there, in the meantime.

Looks like a terrific camera. This and the X100 could be quite a travel pair. I'm not sure the OVF bothers me because with my XZ-1 I rarely use the EVF. Still, if the X10 VF was an EVF that would be even better.

Edit: I just saw the X10 site and learned that the OVF zooms with the lens. How cool is that!

Thanks Fuji.
