Fuji X10 Premium Compact Announced

Since I'm on a Fuji roll, and am procrastinating...I've come across an interesting sort of "pre review" comparing the X100 and the X10 by Dan Carr:Fuji X10 Vs. X100 » Dan Carr Photography - Photography Product Reviews + Ski, Snowboard and adventure photography tips thanks to a post on PhotoRumors.:th_salute:

I think Dan Carr makes some very good observations about the appeal of both of these cameras, though at this point the X10 is limited to some good hard facts and much conjecture.

And apparently this new Fuji X10 can be pre ordered via Adorama which is one of our affiliates, I'm glad to note. *The Adorama sales people have just alerted me to keep checking their website because it should be up soon.

Adorama is already taking pre-orders.

Geezum, another GAS attack! What da' do, what da' do. :) I agree, it looks like a great travel companion to the X100.
. . . David

I took a trip a while back with the X100 and the LX-5, with the LX5 in the role you're thinking about for the X10. I think I pulled the LX5 out one time and that was mostly out of guilt for neglecting it. I suspect if I took an X100 and an X10, the same fate would befall the X10. Then again, I took a more recent trip with the X100 and EP3 (and a few lenses), and I probably shot the EP3 about 75% of the time, so I guess these things are variable. I still can't see any place for an X10 in my shooting - I sold an LX6 that I really liked because it wasn't being used (see above sentence!), and even though the quality of the X10 might be a bit better (remains to be seen, but that's the only rationale for it I can see), I don't see where it would fit in either. I could maybe see getting one for my wife - it would probably beat her current P&S for her needs, but she doesn't care, so that's highly unlikely too.

I know I don't need one, I have too many cameras, many gathering dust, but its such a fine looking camera I'm hopng for early winter snow so I wont be able to get anywhere near a camera shop in case I'm tempted ... and I'm always tempted!

I have a Canon T2i, but really want something smaller and less conspicuous. I've tried several m4/3, but just can't get over the mental or pragmatic point that, with even one or two additional lens, I'd be shelling out more than I did for the T2i kit. I was ready to pull the trigger on either a G12 or an XZ today, but then I saw this post. On paper, this seems to fit my wishes very well. The manual zoom and at least half-way usable OV seem especially helpful compared to the G12 or Olympus. Plus, while I want something smaller and less intrusive than a dslr, I'm not looking for an 18 megapixel spy camera. In fact, I want something I can wear around my neck or sling over my shoulder, go about my business, take a walk, stroll through the market, whatever, and shoot whatever catches my eye. I've had smaller P&Ss and I often found I didn't bother pulling them out of my pocket, let alone digging them out of a backpack.

I just threw my wallet on the floor in front my black lab Stanley. Sadly, he had already eaten dinner..........

I've never been happier with a camera purchase than with the X100 so..........................
So does this bode well for a companion to the X100 or that the X100 stands so stellar it stands alone?

Sorry but the imagery was just too good!

Much as I *believe* I want this, I'm going to go down the same path as I did with the X100. I refused (for once) to get caught up in the pre-order hype, and instead decided that I would not buy until I had gone hands on with one. I did that at PMA Sydney, but not for long enough. The repeat was in the camera store. I had a lot of time with it, and that combined with the good price meant the deal was done.

I'll wait til I can handle it and see how it goes. This means... maybe next year.

Hmmm...I commend your resolve Sue, I really do. But when one gets caught up, it's a miracle how the world bends to deliver us our desired kit :jedi:

To be honest, I've spent the day doinf research and I think I'm in a quandary. The X10's form factor is brilliant, as is the OVF, but I might get a little hung up on both the sensor size and the controls - neither of which are an issue (and are actually hold most sway) with the X100.

So I'm resolved to losing the dSLR, but not sure whether it might be to the NEX7 or the hope that Fuji will come out with an ILC based on the faux-RF design :cloud-9-039:

So I'm resolved to losing the dSLR, ...

Me too, I think. I just haven't had the same feeling for the DSLR since the advent of the X100. Even before I got it. I had been bumbling on for a couple of years about wanting a rangefinder style camera, so its not like its a sudden desire. Came close with the G11 but that OVF was just dreadful. X100 ticks most, if not all, the boxes. And, if I want to shoot birds (which from time to time I do) I have some long zoom point and shooters. Not perfect, but then neither is the DSLR or the only 300mm lens I could afford to buy for it. I think my kit would go better in someone else's hands, and me with $$$ in the bank.

I couldn't have said it better myself! So goodbye Pentax? I best list on the other site before the Marketplace becomes flooded then ;)

But now that I am but resolved on the sale....what to buy? A little spoiled by the X100 I fear, and not sure what woud approximate it? Fuji X-series ILC?

I can't believe the bable about this, nor the amazing price,...so much excitement about the latest 'cachecam' that will mostly hang around the necks of the moneyed while they pose at the beach.....

..........Unfortunately, as with the x100, camera makers are getting the wrong message about the camera market and what turns the best profit and why.

If they make it and market it and it sells and people like it and some even take some nice photographs with it, how is that the wrong message? And by what other method are they supposed to discern the RIGHT message? Just ask you or me? I'm a damned small market. I suspect you are too.

Fuji is on the right track. They are making cameras that think like cameras. The X10 is another step in the right direction. It's prolly not for me due to a few simple issues but it's a good choice for many.
The messages Fuji is sending is just a response from their users.
They pay attention. the X100 is an esoteric camera with a semi-cult following.
The X10 would suit most members of this forum and thus almost anyone.

Kudos to Fuji for not following the mainstream and for forging their own way as they always did.

The questions I would like answers for are:

- will the X10 produce images with noticeably more dynamic range and finer tonal gradations of colour than the Canon S95 or Ricoh GRD III?
- will the X10 be operationally faster than those cameras?
- will the X10 output raw files when shot in DR mode? i.e., will we be able to take advantage of the EXR sensor architecture in raw mode?
- will the X10 have very quiet focus and shutter sound? Accurate and fast AF? And a very light AA filter for maximum detail?

If the answer is yes to these questions then I will most likely buy this camera. I guess we'll have to wait for Santa to bring it to the early adopters so we can get their reports!

I think the camera looks very interesting. If the OVF showed some helpful info, it would be super.

Bugleone, I think one needs to remember that a lot of excitement is just that...across the Internet people on forums love to get excited about things for a variety of reasons...and sometimes it really is based in solid interest in a form of camera that appeals to them.

I'm going to go over and give my X100 a hug now, since she remains the apple of my eye, next to my daughter, that is.;)

P.S. Archiver, I had missed your post! All good questions and I am sure that we'll all be trolling the waters and report back as more info and real life photographs from the camera emerge.(y)

Some of your sensor / IQ questions maybe answered by looking at the last 2/3 sensor Fuji put into the S100FS a few years back.

Fujifilm FinePix S100FS Camera - Review

To me, the small sized sensor is just very ... unexciting. The form factor looks great. But every time I look at difference in IQ between my S90 vs. even a 4/3 sensor, it's difficult to want to use cameras with small sensors. Hence, my significant other gets to use the S90 all the time now (replaced her SD400). The IQ of my S90 vs. the X100 is even more noticeable.

If I were to get a X10, I'd hope that Fuji improved the AF speed and accuracy. With the X100, I still miss candids, because the AF is either too slow or it won't lock onto the subject.
