Christmas came early for Star Wars fans

Out Of Nowhere
The announcements for everything in the works from Disney today was huge. Any Star Wars fan should be really happy.

I'm really enjoying the live action TV model for telling Star Wars stories. I thought on the whole the recent trilogy was pretty bad, and proved just how tired the Skywalker storyline is, but the offshoot stories have been great! Rogue One and Solo interested me a lot more than the recent "mainline" movies.

TV gives the freedom to go down rabbit trails in the SW universe, which is where I think the most interesting stuff happens. The grimy and forgotten corners of the galaxy. Of course the Obi Wan story will have some connections to the old Skywalker saga, but Ewan McGregor was the best part about the prequels, so I don't mind!

Personally not exactly a fan of Disney for milking the SW franchise for all it's worth.
Rogue One and Rebels were okay to watch.
But I'm sure there are plenty of people who'll love it all regardless.

I don't have Disney+, so no Mandalorian for me. I guess I'll have to get my kicks out of playing the Star Wars - Age of Rebellion role-playing game ;)

I didn't have any serious objections to the recent trilogy, although I do wonder how it would have looked had Lucas not sold creative control. He said from the very beginning that 9 movies were planned, but I guess he just got tired and gave up. I also don't have Disney+, so no Mandalorian for me, either. I'll look around and see if I can find a DVD box set at a reasonable price. As for the theatrical productions, Solo wasn't bad, but I think Rogue One was the best of the bunch.

When the original Star Wars came out, I was in grade school....and named Luke. I've put up with people doing the "Luke, I am your father" in horrible Darth Vader voices ever since then. I LOVED that first movie....bought a bunch of the toys and played with them. I loved the Empire Strikes Back, too. Then the third came out and I thought it was a dud. By the time the next trilogy came out, I just didn't care anymore.

I'm not anti-sci-fi, but the quality seems to have left a LONG time ago.

I bet nobody ever told you to "use the Force" either ...

I was thirteen when the first film came out, and I really enjoyed it. I preferred Close Encounters, which came out a few weeks later, but Star Wars was great.

(Both of those films were movie phenomena. They did huge business and the publicity was everywhere - particularly for Star Wars. Never seen queues like those at the cinema before or since)

By the time The Empire Strikes Back came along I was sixteen years old, and no longer attracted to something I perceived to be basically made for kids. It also had a whiff of 'lame sequel' about it, so I stayed away. In fact I stayed away until about five years ago, when I watched all three of the original movies over consecutive weekends on TV. I was happy to watch them, but I think the sixteen-year-old me made the right decision.

I think they did a great job with 'The Mandalorian' - taking the look and feel of the originals and refreshing it for today...

For the first time in a loong time, a Star Wars themed thing made me feel like a kid again (rather than watching something 'made for kids').
It's also more of a Western, really :)

Love Mandalorian, it's not too serious and they did such a good job with the effects, it's the popcorn SW experience on TV. Whenever SW gets too wrapped up in its own self seriousness, I have to roll my eyes. One of the most annoying things for me is the silly names, I was raised on Tolkien but SW always irks me with its names that are solely picked for their ear sound, being outlandish while kind of unintentionally punning off of language that evokes whatever the character or place is meant to resemble.

Hahaha, couldn't agree more on the names :) (and the languages in general - especially compared against Tolkien).

Not taking itself too seriously is a huge part why 'The Mandalorian' works for me (eg vs the recent movies).

And as for the visual effects - I'm proud to have worked on the most recent episode ('The Tragedy')... Being able to flatten a stormtrooper with a rolling boulder (Indiana Jones style) was definitely a highlight of the year for me :-D

Mandalorian is awesome because Disney hired competent people who respect the source material and those people hired creative talent who are passionate about Star Wars. I pretty much wrote off Star Wars because I thought all the new trilogy movies sucked. I find the side stories of Rogue One and Mandalorian far more interesting just for their nuanced details...and I like a bit of gritty, slower paced storytelling!

Awesome! I've really enjoyed the effects throughout the series so far - the stormtrooper battle was a great set piece in the most recent episode, notwithstanding some of the decisions around how the protagonist acted... JETPACK much? Why was it suddenly so heavy he needed to remove it?

Haha, don't get me started on that whole removing the jetpack, but didn't bother to put it back on in order to fly up that hill in 10 seconds, instead of running with a full suit of Mandalorian beskar armor!

I get sweaty just walking up stairs! Lol

Haha, I thought he had to remove the jetpack as part of the resolution of the initial confrontation with 'that other guy'...
(Now why he didn't put it back on again is another question :) )

I have a vivid memory of my uncle pulling me out of school on opening day in 77 without explanation, waiting in a horrific line at Mann's Chinese and my mouth dropping at the opening scene with the star destroyer.
My uncle rocked!

Enjoying the Mando and looking forward to the new lineup!
Wow you watched it at Mann's Chinese Theater in '77? That's classic! I did see Return of the Jedi in the theaters as a kid (I think I was 3 or 4?) Hence my appreciation for the emo Skywalker with robotic hand! :roflmao:

I'm a bit older; A New Hope came out the summer I graduated HS. I remember being in the school library and reading a story in Time magazine about a space opera movie that was predicted to be the biggest movie ever. "Yeah, right." was my reaction. We had old-time theaters all over the valley back then, and I waited on opening day in a line that stretched out the door, around the corner, and all the way around the downtown city block.
