GAS GAS: Please Share your Latest Acquisitions Big and Small

A Christmas present from the wife and family - I made known my desire for a good scanner, specifically the Pacific Image XAs, and I got it! The last few days have been trying to come to terms with Silverfast and get the best out of it. I have to be ready when my bargaining chip offer of scanning their old negatives gets called on! Initial results indicate: it's really really good.

At work we always joke that the most important bit of kit is the label-machine
Finally bought a cheap one of my own. Going to itemise and label-up all my camera body-bases (will add battery type to my metered film bodies too).
That's funny, I was just thinking yesterday that I should've asked my wife for a labeler. I've been mostly working from home this year so rarely have access to the labeler at work.

They were the redundant lenses in my m43 and Fuji kits, figure they can bless someone else.

Panasonic 25/1.7, sigma 60/2.8, oly 40-150/4-5.6, Fuji 17-50....all good, inexpensive lenses, but replaced with other stuff in my lens drawer.

I already have the Oly 25/1.8, which I prefer over the panny. The 60 and 40-150 is replaced by a Panasonic 35-100/2.8 and the Fuji 16-50 is replaced by a Fuji 16-80/4.

OK, so not photography related...but man do I love this thing. Got it as a Christmas gift from my mother in law. Thanks goes to the wife for letting her know I was wanting it.

It's just the bottom part, but it is called Pandora's Toybox 3D. You can connect it up to any monitor that accepts HDMI or VGA input. Has a built in speaker and comes with 2 controllers...but accepts 2 additional controllers via USB for 4 player action! Has 4018 games preloaded and a marketplace where you can get 10,000 more games.
It runs all the popular gaming emulators from Nintendo 64 and original Playstation and older.

The big draw for me is that it has all the Neo Geo arcade games....so now I no longer need to lug out those big notebook size cartridges and the console to play Samurai Showdown or King of Fighters!

What is it with m43 that makes one buy so much gear? I mean, there's no way I purchase as much on my Nikon setup, even though many of the lenses are actually cheaper than their m43 counterparts. Over the years in m43, I bought this lens then that lens, upgraded the camera, I thought ,conservatively. Until I was shocked to realise that I could sell it all (and some Fuji gear) for over six grand(!?). I did, and exchanged it for a rangefinder, Summicron and a fair bit of change! For some reason, m43 really made one accumulate.

The lenses are just so compact, they just keep on accumulating. 😎

Finally gave in and placed on order:

Peak Design Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod

This was a tough one because rationally it makes sense to own at least one good tripod but my heart simply didn't agree on the spending. Splurging 8000 € on a Leica would have been so much easier to do, this took a good several days for me to accomplish. I do think, rationally, it's the right call. I believe the next Leica M won't have an IBIS either and Finnish winters are dark and there are situations where even a good IBIS won't cut either. 🧐

Cameras and lenses come and go; bags and tripods are forever.

I'd love to blame it on the gear, but I'm just someone that likes to experiment - so no matter the mount, I buy and sell and trade the various gear.

M43 might be a bit easier because of the price point on the lenses and bodies now. Unless you are going high end, most lenses can be found for $300 or less on the used market and that is from the big players like Adorama, BH, KEH and MPB. Private sellers can often be found for less.

I never planned to go back into M43 either, but when you find some great prices on used bodies and lenses - its hard to say no to them, especially when you understand the capabilities! Oddly, I've found that I really prefer the 16mp sensor in the m43 over the newer 20mp one (the PEN-F being the exception)! Now, I've got an EP5 and an EM1.1 again. Never thought I'd do that since getting the Fuji setup as my secondary system.

I've come to realize though that every system has their place and I can love them all differently, but equally.

m43 = smallest system for good light use
Fuji = small system, but analog feel - gives me the most "pleasure" in the shooting experience and I love using the film simulations
Nikon = my work kit. When I am on the job or "absolutely, positively need to ensure the shot and best quality" kit.
Instax/Polaroid = sometimes, you just need to shoot some film. No fuss, no muss...just take the image, wait between 5 and 15 minutes, depending on the film and there you go! I like keeping this around to snag impromptu portraits of people on the street or to use at an event to give people "immediate feedback". Plus, I have an SX-70 Sonar....and there is just something magical about that camera. It gives me the same "pleasure" as shooting the Fuji XPro-2 or X100V.

M4/3 encourages experimenting because there are two major players in the field, who have both put out multiple options for the common focal lengths. I've gone through many wide to standard lenses, yet somehow haven't even touched a Panasonic 25mm f1.7, an Olympus 17mm f1.8 or the Panasonic 15mm f1.7. It's an embarrassment of riches (at affordable prices) for small and quality primes. Oh, and then there's affordable bodies! M4/3 doesn't improve on core technology nearly often enough, yet puts out new bodies almost on a smartphone timetable, driving down the value of previous models.

Agree with this. The last m43 I had was the Pen-F with the 17mm 1.8 - it was a great combo overall, but I sadly sold it in an effort to downsize my gear a couple of years ago.

The 15mm 1.7 has always been tempting to me and have many times considered picking one up with a GX9 to be a sort of poor man’s Leica Q (currently causing me severe GAS). That combo, paired with the Panasonic 42.5mm seems like a perfect compact all purpose kit, at a very affordable price.

In my opinion, the GX series has never deviated from being the purpose-built companion for the 20mm f1.7. The GX9 is no exception. Those two together, whew.
