How's weather at your place?

Ludicrous today ... Outside my back door... And it got hotter. Cool change coming overnight. I spent the day on the couch in a direct line to the window a/c. The heat has not been helping with my nosebleeds, but so far OK today. Nearly bedtime, maybe the really hot stuff is gone for a while.

Wow. I haven’t seen 106 since I lived in Austin. Counterpoint, I went out today to shovel snow. My wife said to be careful and not have a heart attack. Shoveling snow was the leading cause of death of men over 40 during January in my hometown of Fall River, Massachusetts. So, of course, I snapped the shovel in half and she says I didn’t listen to her. 🙄

Sunny but cold and windy. Supposed to be down around 19F (-7C) tonight, with more sun tomorrow. Gonna be a great morning for a bike ride.

Cold and icy. It was just overcast and cool yesterday, and a very light rain started falling yesterday evening, quickly progressing to a very heavy rain. It was raining heavily when I went to sleep last night, but the temperature dropped quickly, and I woke to a couple of inches of snow and a layer of ice hanging on nearly everything, with power outages all over.

We seem to be on a roller coaster, with fast moving snow systems dumping a couple of inches of snow, followed by a couple days of cold, then a slow warmup. As soon as most of the snow is melted, the cycle repeats. Speaking of which, I was planning to head to a favorite trail about an hour away tomorrow and do some river riding, but we're looking at the prospect of more ice tonight. Might be a day for staying in and hitting the spin bike.

We have one of the coldest spells for at least five years (I think it's longer) - now we're even looking at temperatures as low as -15 to -20 degrees Celsius within the next couple of days. Pair this with windy conditions, and you have a witch's brew for some serious chill ... Thankfully, precipitation is quite low, so snow covers are rather thin, and roads are mostly clear.

However, I had a chance today to venture deeper into the forest than I had been for a while - and damage (and thus, danger) is pretty worrying. The fact that we haven't had anything comparable for so long makes falling trees and branches way more probable than in recent years.

I'll try the lakeside tomorrow - better stay on the safe side for the time being ...

I woke this morning to learn that freezing drizzle overnight had coated everything with an additional 1/10" (.25mm) of clear ice. Dozens of accidents on local roads, including several major accidents that have closed local highways. Our sidewalk and driveway were like a skating rink when I walked our dog this morning. I'd say my decision to cancel today's anticipated cycling outing was a sound one.

I took these images this evening after walking our dog. We've had a cold, clinging chill all day, with a relative humidity of 92% and a heavy overcast. It never got warm enough to begin thawing the ice that has covered branches and power lines for the past two days. It may not tomorrow, either. I'm a bit concerned, because we have several trees near our house in the 100 foot (30 meters) range. Local meteorologists are comparing this to the winter of 77-78, which was particularly rough in these parts.

The cold, clinging chill has been enhanced by a fine mist that has been falling all afternoon. It is expected to freeze again tonight. And beginning tomorrow, one weather model is predicting 6-9" (150-225mm) of snow. So I'll get to pull out our snowblower and use it for the 4th time since I bought it 5 years ago.
