Let's start with a little note: Wikipedia is running out of stuff to say about the numbers we're reaching ... So my entries may in fact become somewhat more random.

To show this, let's look back at something really trivial:

In 1972, on this date, the Volkswagen Beetle (or Bug) surpassed the Ford Model T. as - at the time - the best selling vehicel ever; until its end of production, 21'529'464 vehicles were build. A real "people's car" (that's what "Volkswagen" actually means).

Here's a very American take on things (not everything this guy thinks funny actually is, but well ...); information is mostly accurate.

To get over that, here's a very different angle (also American!):

I've never had a Beetle, just four Renault 4, but many of my friends drove it. In the winter, you had to defrost the windscreen inside with your hands while driving (thanks to the air-cooled boxer engine). But the triangular side windows had their advantages. On the way back home with a friend of mine the winshield wipers broke down midway from the Scottish Highlands to the ferry in Hull. With the aid of a strong cord from the wipers through both windows I kept them moving in the strong rain from the passenger seat thus providing clear sight for the driver.
