GAS GAS: Please Share your Latest Acquisitions Big and Small

Am currently on a major purge of stuff, both camera related and other somewhat obsolete hobbies stuff, to fund the wants I have (somewhat few and far between, almost over GAS at the moment), but pondering a decent high end(ish) compact, so had a browse on a semi local brick and mortar, to see what they had used.

Lo and behold, they had a Panasonic 1.4X tc, looking mint and at about 40% of the new price. Now I will trundle back and forth to the mailbox, starting tomorrow... 🤪

Also got a Datacolor SpyderX pro, worked wonders on the Laptop monitor (96% Srgb, I found) and will use it on the large monitor, when I get around to it. Interesting enough, the calibration was very subtle but very noticeable, I was somewhat fearful how my editing would look on a calibrated monitor, but as far as I can tell, I may have steered clear of any major blemishes other than possibly a tad on the heavy side on greens.

I was amazed to see you can still buy these cameras new. In production since 2013 or so? I was always tempted but with no Nikon lenses the buy in is a bit higher. I do like 50’s, however.
I was surprised to find out about this too, but at least Nikon Finland did withdraw Df from their online store last year. Up until then, both colors were available brand new for about 2000 EUR.

Currently their store website is sufficiently broken that I can't browse refurbs. Last year they had a healthy selection of refurbished Dfs also for around 1600 €.

While there is Df stock still available, I think they ceased production some time ago. Prices are too high and are not looking to come down. Nikon need at least 1 camera with a meter coupling lever that can be moved out of the way. A Df2 with better AF, 24mp (perfectly adequate) and a much lower price would be nice.

And throw in the metering coupling shoe for better pre-Ai support, while at it.

Oh dear,
I told you in this thread how I don't fancy Canon as a brand. Already before I have had my doubts whether EOS 5D Mark III is my thing. And looked elsewhere.

Today I finally traded the beast in, together with boxed Fuji X100S, which I haven't use for almost two years now.

And guess what?

I bought this 🙄

You know, I've realized the worst thing you can do in this thread is to complain about something, carefully go through in your head why you don't like it, and in the process convince yourself to buy one.
Yes, indeed. Just that in my case I had already found out that I really liked the easiness to shoot with EF 50mm F1.2L and 5D Mark III. I just wrestled with the idea clearing my camera cabinet. And concentrating to photography instead of the gear. But because I don't adore the Canon as a brand, I had hard time to decide. Then I read some forum member in some other forum praising the missing features of Mark III which Mark IV has, and it was then decided. And I pulled the plug and bought new one, for the rest of my photo shooting time, I'd like to believe. (And I have other cameras to seek change from 🙃)

Yep, this may be the most dangerous thread on the entire forum. "Personal gear review" follows closely on its heels.

This is as hilarious as it is spot on! Case in point: I've been adamant about Sony not being for me for a while now, and specifically, the A7C being compromised in ways that are making it a no-go for me - yet, with the arrival of the small primes, it's the camera/lens combo I keep thinking about the most. Not really at a level I'd call G.A.S. (yet?), but I keep coming back to it - it'd make a fantastically portable, yet capable system ... very suitable for my usual needs. My attitude is quite pathetic, really - not the least because I'm probably right about my hunch, but also stubborn enough not to admit it ... :dash2:

That said, I acquired something completely different recently - also due to some images and impressions from this board ... I'll show it when it arrives.

The problem for me (or, more precisely, my wallet) with the A7C is that the tracking AF looks amazing in the videos I've seen, and I have grandkids. I could easily sell the A7Riii and buy one.

I have an A7 II waiting to be replaced by ... something. I only keep it to get full use of the Sigma 45mm (of course, within the limits of the A7 II ...). I really have to stop reminding myself how much nicer that lens would look and work on an A7C ...

Darn. At it again ... :p

Picked up a Jupiter 12 that is supposed to have been adjusted to LTM standard. I emailed the fellow on ebay selling it and his description of what he did sounds right (based on things BrianS has said) so I bought it. Even if it doesn't work exactly, it was cheap enough and came with a 35 ltm -> m adaptor and that's worth the price itself.

And it fits on my Canon 7 so that's a plus as well. Be fun to try it once I get the M digital I'm planning for later this year.

Nikon 16-80E 2.8-4 Dx VR ect. ect. Speaking of thinning ones wallet Tony, I have done that with this DX kit, but it's complete now. Tamron 70-200 f2.8 G2 or Nikon 70-200 F4 + Nikon 16-80 e 2.8-4 and Tokina 11-16 2.8 CF . That kit equals or betters the best FX kit I've had. Here's to burning some pixels. Gear thinning of my own to start soon.

Not going to help, but Matt and Steve, the A7C is a fantastic camera for both a compact high quality system or for grandkid chasing.

AFC focusing is so good at both tracking or composing - point at subject, half press, then recompose to your hearts content and the focus will follow.

And yes, those new compact G primes look like a perfect set of options for this camera. I am seriously considering the 40mm to replace my little Sony Zeiss 35mm. The new G is a bit larger, but offers the aperture ring (and switches) that would be very nice on the A7c and give me that old school feel.

Matt, a couple things to help you fight off your GAS:
- Nikon should be releasing 28 and 40 compact primes for the Z mount, per their roadmap
- The AFC of the A7c likely won’t be of much use with your little Sigma 45mm. That lens really struggles with the phase detection AF used in that mode.
