Fuji The X100 went Hut Skiing

We went cross country skiing for 3 days up in the montains of Washington, in a ski-to only hut system. They haul your bags via snowmobile, and you ski uphill for about 5 miles (gaining 1,400 ft elevation in the process) to your reserved hut. It was magical. Huts have 3 solar lights, propane stove, woodstove for heat, & matresses. I brought the original 2012 X100 for kicks, plus the XT1 with 56 1.2 lens, which I barely used.

Not our hut, but very similar.

You guys have the coolest adventures.

As far as I'm concerned, the lens of the OG X100 (and subsequent up to F) is plenty sharp, except at close distances wide open. The V's lens is much sharper there, and a bit sharper at the edges wide open, but the latter never bothered me; that lens was just so, so full of character.

I'm not convinced that any of the X-trans sensors have jpegs quite as magical as the OG X100.

These shots are lovely, I can imagine the X100 being just small enough to bring easily with winter clothes, and just big enough to be easy to control with gloves.

And yes, a really cool adventure! Did your daugter ski uphill all the way herself, too?

On the OG X100: Yes, the glass gets soft at f2 and close distances. Not "bad" soft, just not as sharp as we've all been spoiled to expect from Fuji. For peoples' faces, it's actually a feature, not a bug... a little bit of softness helps. Cameras, including this thing's grandchildren, have gotten a lot faster in operation, and of that I am 100% jealous. But this one isn't unusably slow, it's just not as fast as the new stuff. And shooting the XT1, much less the XE3, you notice it. But when you only shoot the X100 for a day or more, you stop noticing it after a few shots, and that just becomes the speed of response your brain expect from it. The size is perfect for tucking into a coat and zipping up, or stashing in a small bag over your shoulder. The Bayer sensor is easy to fall in love with - much more forgiving in some ways than all the ensuing X-Trans ones. This camera, I leave on Auto WB -- never the X-Trans ones. Colors come out "right" more or less every time. I find myself just using it as a point-n-shoot, with the EV Comp knob taking care of my exposure tweaks.

This Trip: The daughter recently switched from Classic cross country skis to skate skis. They're way faster, but going uphill is harder, and there's a certain pitch at which she just can't hack it yet. So on the way up, she clicked out and walked a lot of it, with each of us adults carrying one of her skis in a hand. But she made it!

^ That's a SOOC pano from the X100. Always thought it did a great job with those.

And I wanted to upload a shot from the XT1 + 56, but it will NOT upload in the correct orientation... it's portrait, and now matter what I do to it prior to upload, it will only load sideways. Kinda hilarious. Here's a landscape shot or two with it, then...
