My 2nd favorite photographic forum, after Cameraderie natch, has not been connecting for a day or so.

Anyone have any idea what's going on?

thanks

Was banned from that forum a long time ago. I can't remember what I said but I do recall it wasn't anything contentious or controversial, and thinking: "...wait a minute, I was banned for that..??"

Then a couple of years later, I found out that the admin had a reputation for being a dictator and would ban people for the littlest things. I found out because I was in a facebook photography group and there was a commotion involving a handful of people, rather like when you see a flock of seagulls making a racket over a french fry someone had thrown on the ground. I went over to have a look and somebody pointed out that one of the participants in the discussion was the admin of GPI himself whom I recognised in his facebook profile.

Apparently his trigger finger pissed off several people and they took that opportunity to comment on that. I chimed in with: "oh you're the guy ... you certainly banned me for the dumbest reason too..." And then boom, he blocked us all, hah. If he could have banned us from facebook, he would have.

And thus is my history with getDPI.

Without defending or criticizing their actions, all forum websites controlled by a single person (or few persons) seem to suffer these types of issues. I'm a member of a couple of others that occasionally have significant member purge due to a fit of angst by the overlords. It doesn't make sense because if you are surviving on ad revenue to support a site, reducing the number of views isn't helping your cause.

In any event, getdpi.com was transitioned over to different management (mediumformat.com) after the originators declared they weren't interested in managing it any longer. That was about a year ago.

Saying all that, traffic has diminished quite a bit, but there was a plethora of archived imagery that was available for perusal. It would be unfortunate to lose that.

Doing a check on the wayback machine, the most recently archived copy of getdpi was about 18 months ago. :(

I posted a message on mediumformat.com about it.

cheers,
