Which "serious compact" you're dreaming of?

You know, Herman, I am stopping the serious compact dream. I dreamed of the X100 for almost a year and now that I have it, and I like it, I wonder why I was so determined to have it. It has not really fulfilled any photographic need for me which one of my other cameras could not have, except the manual aspects. Its slow, and I cant use the VF effectively.

Then again... maybe an X10. Or an E-P3. Or a G3. Or an XZ-1.

There are too many to choose from and its time I stopped.

Oh the choices.

There are so many I could go for, it justs gives me a headache thinking about it. GXR with Leica mount would be great, but I couldnt afford the lenses. Olympus EP3? Fuji X100 with interchangeable lenses and excellent manual focus all for £400 maximum?

and then once youve bought it,summat 'seemingly' better comes along. Oh what a quandary!!! Why cant anyone build me my perfect camera!!!!!

A-HA!!!!! I think I'e hit upon my best business idea to date. not telling any of you though.

Whenever a subject like this comes up I like to remember that with film an upgrade to your "sensor" could easily be accomplished in the field, at very low cost, simply by popping a different roll of film into your camera body. Subscribing to that thought, I bought into a decent camera system in 1979 and used that same system for three decades.

Ignoring cameras bought for the family, I have owned exactly one digital camera so far in my 50 years and that's the X100. It took that long for something that appealed to me to come along. While I still love it, using the X100 has convinced me that I can lock into today's technology - sensor wise - and pair it up with old or new lenses and be more than pleased with the results for a goodly long time. So I'm going to buy into an interchangeable lens system of some sort - leaning NEX but still not truly committed until the credit card is dinged - and move forward without worrying about what might come next.

Today's sensors can give me all that I need and want. No need to dream or hold out for more.

I'm hoping for an LX7(?) at some point - nothing radical, just another good incremental development of the series. I would like to see some improvement in the sensor - a bit more DR a little better low-light performance - and I would love to have an LCD screen like the one on the NEX. Maybe some lens tweaks - 1.8 at the wide end? Up to 105 on the tele end and 2.8?

I would buy that.

um ... it's the size and shape of an E-P2, it's got a full frame Foveon sensor and a built-in EVF; and it's inexpensive.
Mind you I don't expect it would improve my photography any.

Still waiting for the Ricoh GRD with an APS-C or maybe a proper reincarnation of the Olympus XA with APS-C (although we are more likely to get m4/3 on that one). Basically, anything I can truly slip in my pants pocket that has a large sensor, fast prime lens and maybe even an OVF or high quality EVF.

I liked the news from Panasonic that they are looking at a larger sensor for the next LX camera but they need to knock off that lens protrusion and make something more slim like the GRD or S95 while they are at it.

Seriously, all my photographic needs are currently being met by a DSLR and the NEX, minus a true pocket camera that has IQ rivaling the old film compacts like the Contax T3, Leica Minilux and Ricoh GR1.

I'd like to see Fuji release a firmware for the X100 that would do the following:

(1) put the freakin' auto ISO menu on the same menu as ISO ... yes, I've been ranting about this for a while now ... Fuji, are you listening???

(2) improve the speed and accuracy of the AF in AF-S mode to a similar level as the Pany GH2/G3 and/or Oly EP3/EPL3/EPM1.

That's all I need from you Fuji, and I'd be super happy.

I'm feeling pretty content these days too. My only wish list items are more Ricoh GXR units - a 24mm A12, an A12 somewhere between 75-100mms and the medium sensor zoom due out any day (or so they say...).

There are a lot of good cameras out there today.

Exactly! These two improvements would make an already excellent camera simply brilliant.

I am content with m43, while I wait for an affordable FF mirrorless. I am even toying with the idea of an M6. I just can't afford an M9 ( I can afford it, I just can't justify the cost in my soul).
