The Pound … The Drover’s Rest by Andrew Priest, on Flickr

We had now moved on from the Goolinee Cattle Pool back to Burringurrah and a natural area known as the Pound, that drovers used for holding cattle before the next stage to Meekatharra, a day’s drive away today.

Facsimile of an advertisement appearing in the New Zealand West Coast Times of April 1884. It is on display at Shantytown, a heritage village near Greymouth in the South Island. The village recreates a 19th century pioneer village, being inspired by the gold rush of the 1860s. An interesting place to visit. Nice vintage train ride in the bush and activities such as gold panning.
Is Greymouth near Hokitika? The name seems familiar from my two readings of The Luminaries.
