Just in case know one knows this......

You can open Jpg images in Camera Raw in PS or PS Elements. All you do is go to 'Open' and click once on the desired Jpg image. In the drop down menu (Bottom left) choose 'Camera Raw' and hey presto your image opens in Camera Raw. This means you have the same controls as if ti were a RAW file like temp and clarity.

Cool eh!

Sorry if you knew this already but i have just found it and it's brill!! :D

Remembering however that all the sharpening, contrast, colour balance etc. are already set in the jpg file from the camera, and can't be undone, only compensated for. White balance adjustments are also somewhat restricted. Its a useful tool, but there is nowhere near the flexibility or "elasticity" that a true raw file offers.

Yes this is very true but there are a few sliders that are available and easy to use in ACR if you do not have Lightroom.

The reason why I popped this up was that i have not so far been happy with the images from my Nikon D90 and 16-85mm lens which is supposed to be a good lens. I have been shooting almost exclusively in RAW for the past 3 years but the NEF files from the Nikon were just not working for me. I have just tried in camera JPG and the images are much improved and i can seem to get more from them using the above method.

Here is an example of just how sharp i managed to get the image. I don't think it's over sharpened and it's about as good as it gets...well for me anyway :D

With PhotoShop if you open a RAW file it comes up with a simplified version of lightroom. Elements ACR is not as sophisticated as PhotoShop ACR It's cool that you can open Jpg files in ACR and use the same sliders as Lightroom.

ACR:

Lightroom:

In Photoshop Elements, you go to File>Open As and choose Camera Raw (not Photoshop Raw) as the choice then pick your JPEG. It gives you a simplified version of ACR with some of the features of full ACR and Lightroom disabled. But the sliders for the key parameters are available and you can do a lot of "pre-post-processing" with it. I especially like the Recovery, Fill Light, Clarity and Vibrance sliders. Their effects can be duplicated in the Elements Editor but not so easily as in the ACR module.

To me there are two main advantages in opening up a JPEG in Photoshop Camera Raw. First all what you do in ACR is not directly applied to the JPEG but to a side car file and therefore it is non destructive. Mind you if you then open the file directly into Photoshop the same is not true. Second you can open up many files at the same time and do a batch edit.
