This is another thread topic that I found fun and interesting on another forum. It's fun to talk about either deals we missed out on for some reason or GAS-fueled purchases averted (or postponed?). We've all had them.

To start the ball rolling, here's a listing on my local ad site which I was not quite fast enough to grab:

Join to see EXIF info for this image (if available)

To recap the listing:
  • Olympus OM-2
  • Olympus OM-4T(i)
  • Zuiko 50mm (not clear which one)
  • Zuiko 35mm (ditto)
  • Zuiko 200mn
  • teleconverter, accessories, bag, etc.
All this at an asking price of US$30!

What purchase(s) have you recently missed out on or been able to avoid?

Twice I've waited too long on the XF 200/2 deep discount (2000US$ off normal price). I could have used the lens for a year or three and sold it with no loss.

I've lost track of the number of times now I've come this >< close to buying a Q2M.

Indeed.

As @Grinsaround notes, almost any of the individual items comprising that package could fetch some multiple of the asking price.

I'm not sure I really want to get into film photography, but the OM-4T has always held a fascination for me. I'm hoping this kit went to someone who will put it to use.

That was an excellent price for that bag o' stuff. Might have gone to a gear flipper.

I tried to go back to film between 12 and 13 years ago. Wasn't too happy with the experience. Already had the gear, just needed to shoot. After shooting digital, shooting film didn't feel like it did pre-1999. To me anyways. Not sure why.

"Lost" out, or more correctly didnt get any answers on "Am interested" messages on a couple of local ads, one for a GX80 with the 14-42 plus a bag and some sundries for $190ish, and a LX3 with the fitted bag for @40ish.

I dont really need any of them, but the CCD sensor of the LX3 seems nice, and at that price the GX80 was priced sensible and I am somewhat interested in trying that kit lens, the MkI are not very nice, but the MkII seems to be a nice one. Several friends has bought the GX80 on my recommendations, but I have still to hold one of them, so picking one up for a song would have landed the "clunker" segment once and for all and in a body with LVF as well as the full 5 axis IBIS.

I guess I will just has to gnash my teeth and bring the G9 with one of the weatherproof lenses if the weather is bad... 😂

Probably more likely than not that you're correct. Realistically, had I bought it at least some of the items likely would've been resold sooner than later, so I guess that makes me a "flipper" as well.

For me, it wouldn't really be "going back", but rather getting into film for the first time. Although I did use film cameras in the pre-digital era, I wasn't really so much into photography as a hobby and it was mostly point and shoot stuff (110, 126 and later APS film).

Red - I wasn't referencing so much those re-selling gear they won't use, but more of the type who look for deals just to flip for a quick profit. Personally, I wouldn't consider you a "flipper".

Family and I were using 110 and 126 in the '70s. In 1980 I got my first 35mm SLR. Tried APS in 1997 IIRC, didn't really like it. Shot a little 645 along the way. Started the transition to digital in 1999. Always enjoyed film back when I shot it, for some reason that enjoyment was gone when I tried to step back.

If you try it, I hope you get some enjoyment out of the trip.

That's too bad. I never developed my film or shot any B&W films pre-digital, just consumer C41 films developed at big box store labs. So when I took up film again recently (second time after digital) I shot B&W and developed it myself, and there was plenty of magic in that for someone who'd never done it before.

Yeah, it kind of surprised me. Of course, I made the decision to not develop myself, so that might have had a little bearing on it.

I really think it does. If you don't have a hand in bringing it about, it's not different enough from applying a heavy film sim to a digital file, in my opinion. That's why I'm all for as quick and dirty of a development and scanning process as you can get. Quality doesn't have to look great, but there's a certain underground charm about pulling images out of film all by oneself in the midst of the digital age.

We learned and did basic B&W development in Art classes in Jr and Sr High, so it's not something I haven't done before. The decision to not develop my own film was due to low tolerance to chemicals and their odors/ smoke/ pollutants/ etc... after retirement. I'd probably enjoy doing it if I could.

Hmm, DF96 monobath is really inoffensive, at least I never noticed much of an odor or anything about it, and since you reuse the solution you don't have to send anything down the sink. If you decide to give things another go, it might be a good choice for some basic B&W stuff. It has good results as long as you get the temp right.

Thanks for the suggestion. But, I think I'll stay digital. Sometimes things that bother me don't have a strong odor. So, to be on the safe side...

I keep looking for a Leica Summitar 50/2 lens that I can afford. I usually find one that is both in decent user condition and at a price I can afford too far away from payday to go for it.

And by payday, they're gone because - yeah, a good lens at a good price.

:dash2:

I put a roll throught a Yashica T5 in 2019/20, to check if it worked properly before selling it.

It was the first analog film I have shot since 2004/05. Found the experience rather tedious, to the tune of most likely not going to bother with it. May run a roll through my Yashica T3, though. The prices on them is rising.

The rest of the lot from days past I think I will keep, but I probably wont spend €100s to have them serviced, based on me getting urges to use them sometimes. They make for a nice "exhibition" set in my study. I could possibly entertain the idea of something medium format, but then again, the enlarger laying about with the rest of the darkroom gear is a 35mm one and I would anyhow end up with the pictures being digitalised, so why bother with the extra steps? :hiding:

Yesterday I was cruising the B and H site and they had my dream system in the used dept.
Came this close >II< to pulling the trigger on an A1 and 100-400 lens.
Probably coulda gotten away with it too since it was my birthday too.

I did an offer on a Olympus E-P7. I am still not sure I 100% wanted it. I kept true to my max offer I wanted to give for it. But the camera doesn't really inspire me too much.

I saw it as a upgrade for me E-pl8.
  • Faster shutter speed
  • 4k video
  • Better ibis
  • same compactness
  • no EVF :/
Just not really sure it's worth >450 euro.
