Went to Goodwood Festival of Speed yesterday, hospitality do through work!

Took so many photos. I'll try not to bombard you all too much, but here are a few...

Good Morning,

Rob, absolutely love the imagery...nice to see you here from MU-43. As you are coming from the M1X to the OM-1, do you feel that the new camera is more responsive to acquiring and locking in C-AF? I ask because I shoot with a pair of M1X's and M1-II's for indoor and outdoor high school sports (for a school I teach at) and my keeper rate is less than my Canon gear, generally. The weight savings is the key for me (turning 71), along with the very high quality of Olympus glass. Cutting to the chase, in your opinion, is it worth letting either camera (MFT) go for an upgrade to the OM-1? The motorsports in my area pales in comparison to what you have; my last blast with that was in the mid-70's (on film - Canon F1's) at Riverside, Seca Laguna and others in California while stationed at Edwards AFB.

Regards,

Edd

I have a question......

Does anyone mind me posting stuff up from my Canon/Nikon full frame machines?

Just realised looking through these images that many, well nearly all, are from the smaller Fuji / M43 (which I also use) sensors and not sure if I am breaking a rule or something?

Not at all.

I think itā€™s more just coincidence than anything else.

NO!!! M-4/3 ONLY!!!!!

Oh wait...sorry...wrong forum.

Post away, any format goes!

Kae and Rob are the resident experts in motorsports over at M-43, both are transplants, or at least partial transplants from there to here. There was an ongoing thread over there, so Kae duplicated it here.

This forum is for images from any make of camera inc camera phone, so no rules. Post away, Nick!

Another scorcher for the third Bracket Race of the season. I had intended on going to the Heads Up event of Friday but it was rained out and postponed until this coming Friday. Many of the cars that race heads up are a lot more advanced than the bracket cars, although some guys cross over into both divisions.

Great photo here and on Flickr too - love the colour and the action (y). Sorry to show my ignorance but the last time I went drag racing (in the 70's in the UK) there were classes for street / modified / funny car / pro fuel etc, but Bracket or Heads Up events? Are these for cars that run a similar time irrespective of their class?

I was (am) in the same boat as you, and while I understand the basic divisions it's taking some time to understand all of the different classes within the divisions.

Basically, bracket racing is where people run anything from street cars to as you see above. Turbo or super charged, Nitrous boosts, etc.. They have several qualifying rounds that allow the drivers to tune their cars, test the track to see how fast it is that day, and see how it 'hooks' (traction at launch). Once they've 'dialed in' their time the elimination rounds start. You may find that two cars racing each other are severely mismatched. The drivers write their dial-in time on the driver's side so the timer can see it from the tower. The timer enters the dial-in for each car in the computer which then compensates for the slower car, allowing it to leave first while the faster car has to catch up. The idea being that it all comes down to driver skill and car tuning. The big problem comes with 'breakout'. You cannot have an elapsed time faster than your stated dial-in. If you do you are disqualified. This is to stop people from sandbagging. People do breakout as the day goes on, usually by a narrow margin. One guy last week broke out by 0.001 of a second! OOPS!

Heads up is just that. There are different classes within, 632, Outlaw, etc., but there's no dial in. Both leave at the same time and whoever gets there first wins. This is more like the cinematic drag racing you see in the movies.

We went to Laguna Seca Raceway this weekend for the MotoAmerica races. They have several classes, including the King of the Baggers, where they race full dress Harleys and Indians. It was an experience watching those bikes go through the world famous Corkscrew.

I shot these with my E-M1 and 75-300 ii. Not the ideal setup, but worked fairly well, especially since I didnā€™t have press credentials and was shooting from the fan areas.
