Sports Show Motorsports

We went to Laguna Seca Raceway this weekend for the MotoAmerica races. They have several classes, including the King of the Baggers, where they race full dress Harleys and Indians. It was an experience watching those bikes go through the world famous Corkscrew.

I shot these with my E-M1 and 75-300 ii. Not the ideal setup, but worked fairly well, especially since I didn’t have press credentials and was shooting from the fan areas.

Wow, like the old saying goes; "f8 and be there..." nice job!

This weekend! Very excited. They still haven't issued media passes, they've been telling us to go to the tower and get a media wrist band. I don't mind doing it this way but there's always that nagging feeling that they've issued them and I got missed/left out. So far it hasn't happened, but I'd feel better with that pass in my wallet!

Nice pictures here and on Flickr too Nick. (y) Have never been to a drift meeting but think I might need to try as it looks spectacular.

Thanks, first time drift for me too and it was rather fun.

There is a Drift Championship over at Three Sisters in Wigan in September, which I think might be more spectacular as the track is a lot smaller and oval. Having watched drifting on YouTube I think that it may well be better suited. However with Three Sisters being small and if it attracts a big crowd, coud be a challenge to shoot. :)

I don't think there's a single part of this that's in focus, but in all fairness as soon as he went sideways and headed toward me, I started moving!

The Oulton Park Gold Cup meeting started in 1954 as non championship Formula 1 races and attracted the F1 drivers of the day. As a spotty fifteen year old in 1968 I was lucky enough to see Graham Hill, Jackie Stewart, Chris Amon and others so I've always had a soft spot for this meeting. Since the early seventies the Gold Cup has seen F5000, British GT, F3000 and BTCC but since the early 2000's it has been for historic cars. This year's meeting was special, for me, as it was for Historic Grand Prix cars up to 1964 - pre wings, pre advertising, etc and an excellent mixture of front and rear engined cars turned out most of which had competed in an earlier period. I tried to capture the spirit of the era by using some, for me, slow shutter speeds and tried to not make the modern day track furniture too obvious. Here's a selection.

Ken,

These really have a nostalgic look to them; I really like the monochrome version the best, but regardless they are great. Thanks for sharing these...it did look like a fun day indeed!

Regards,

Edd

@kae1 did wonder if you would be going but I could not make the Saturday.
I think you got the better weather @Knikki ;)

Nick I see from your posts on Flickr that you've now got an Olympus EM1X and it might be too early to say, but, how are you liking it for motorsports?

Hi @kae1 , yes I picked the Olympus up on Saturday spent about 1 hour messing with it (busy Saturday) and use it on Sunday .

So far I like it, I thought the AF Tracking on the Canon 1Dx was good but the Olympus is just so much better.

I use Auto ISO snd range from 200 - 1600? and I think on the Sunday it used most of them and noise is very well controlled, much better than my OMD 5 MkII (still have that)
The colour palette from the E-1x is different from the OMD 5 and I I have now taken the "Contrast" back to 0 I did have it at +1 which I think was little bit to much for sunny Sunday so still need to twiddle.
Maybe it was because of the sunny day but I do like the rich/warm colours I am getting from the JPEGs, suites my style (if I have one  )
It is bigger, as everyone says, but if you took the grips off the body is no bigger than my OMD 5, it handles very well but the smaller non pro lens, like the 25mm f1.8, make it a little odd to handle, no where to really cup your left hand under the lens, but because of it "lightish" weight it does not pose to mush of a problem.
I have seen a lot of reviews comment on the "weight" but to be honest I did not find this an issue, yes it is heavier than my OMD5 MkII and my mobile phone but it is not so heavy as to be a problem after a long day. Certainly when compared to my other DSLR gear (less the Nikon, that got traded).
I will probably have it with me next time at Oulton (not sure if I am going next Saturday) and if I see you then have a play and see what you think. They have dropped so much in price used that it is certainly worth a ponder about getting one.

In short, yes I like it :)

PS just looking above I notice that you have some shots @ 1/25   (y) really nice as well.
Rats.......going to have to up my game :coffee:

Glad you're liking it Nick.
Thank you for the kind offer - whilst I have held an E-M1X, and it seems to have a nice balance with the heavier lenses, I fear my weak muscles would struggle to lift it for longer periods. In spit of the current excellent vfm at some point (when my EM1ii gives up) I think I'll be looking at a s/h EM1iii. I'm hoping to go to Cadwell this coming weekend to see some sidecars so we won't be able to catch up, but enjoy some more historic racing if you do go.(y)

Another favourite meeting is the Annual Sidecar Revival at Cadwell Park with lots of racing for modern and historic sidecars.

@kae1 Great set of images, looks like you had the weather this time, hard to pick a favorite as I like all of them.
Thank you for the kind words, Nick(y). Sun all day so made a change from the week before. It's a pity that Cadwell isn't nearer to you, as I'm sure you'd love it - it's a bit like a narrow Oulton Park with plenty of opportunities to get close to the track.
