Ricoh The everything GXR Image thread!

retow, allowed me to move his photographs, they were in a non GXR thread ;), so I looked around and felt we might as well have a wide open GXR image thread for all you GXRites.

Very cool toy setting with your m-mount. I bet you could easily do a great series from up there. There's something I just love about these.

Nice but very sad. I think both B&W and colour treatments are viable -the B&W focusing on the woman by stripping out the colour, the colour by placing her sad situation in the context of the brightness of the scene.

I agree with olli. Both are strong images and disturbing. Aesthetically, I prefer the black and white for a number of reasons. That said, both show off the disparity of the haves and the have nots...in the black and white version, there is the interaction of the man who has turned to look...the lines leading to the destitute woman and her dog... I know I don't need to spell it out. For me that is what makes this all the more powerful - the interaction. In the color, it's the tourists going about their sightseeing and likely choosing not to see...as so many of us do because we have either become enured or don't know what to do.

Thank you, Christina for both.

Christina, Maybe I see things somewhat different. I see the B&W as a direct statement. There is no running away from it.
The color has a more illusive way of directness. The color image presents itself as a statement but in less disturbing way. This is supported by the way peole have walked away from the issue with their backs turned.
Both are very well seen and presented. It's nice to see you on the streets....

Received my 28mm this week - thanks to shooter and christilou for all of the feedback! Following are a few handheld HDR shots from the first day with the camera:
Very nice - HDR that has high dynamic range without looking like HDR is the best kind. These are really well done!

One question for those of you with the 28mm lensor. I've heard conflicting stories about how noisy the shutter is - at least one person has indicated to me that its very very quiet (which I, perhaps mistakenly took to mean it was silent like the GRD3) and others indicate it has a very distinct shutter sound. Can you folks clear this up for me. I don't have any current interest in the camera either way, but if its silent, it's gonna be on my radar and I could go there someday. If its a fairly audible shutter, I don't see this bringing anything to the party that I don't already have well covered. Any clarification??

Thanks,

-Ray

Ray, it depends on how the user sets up sounds. All mine are off and I can't hear anything at all. If I''m in a vaccumm I sometimes hear a very quiet click from the blades. You can try mine if you like. I met a guy at the Turkey parade that was testing first day with a Pen3. He loved my camera for its lack of sound. His is noisy.

I like the second the most but they are all nice. How do you get those subdued colours?

Thanks!

I wish I could claim some special, homegrown recipe, but I am just using Nik HDR and their Granny's Attic preset. It tends to be a little harsh on skies, so I dial down structure and method strength (0-50%) there, and then typically bump up structure and saturation a bit over the preset for the rest. I sometimes run single exposures through the plugin, because I like the effect so much. I need to figure out how to do the same in Color Efex.

Thanks for the comments on the HDR!

I uploaded a couple videos of my wife's E-PL3 compared to the GXR 28 for shutter speed:

Overall, I agree with Don that the GXR28 is effectively silent in real world situations.

Outside of noise, I also noticed that I cannot feel the shutter actuation through the body on the GXR. Even with the heavier E-P3, versus the E-PL3, I could feel a slight vibration when the shutter worked. Not a big deal, but I think this is helping me to grab handheld shots, including, 3 exposure HDRs, where I notice a tiny bit less drift (misalignment) than I did with my E-P3. What may be more of an impact here is the shutter button on the GXR. The first stage requires a similar amount of pressure as the E-P3, I think, but the second stage is a hair trigger on the GXR. I think this is helping me big-time on all my handheld shots.

Take all of the above with a grain of salt, given my newb status!

Sorry, I cannot compare to the GDR. I had been wanting one of those for a while, but decided to go with the GXR instead.
