Miguel, what is a buick special. And why?
Pretty much it in a nutshell. Don't forget, the model started in the 30's when 'Special' would've been a good name. The Special was the first Buick to feature a V6. Eventually it stopped being its own model and became an entry level trim package on other models. Mom had a Buick Special in the mid 60's. It was the first time we were a "two-car family'. I'll never forget the faux vinyl roof. It was just the metal roof with a flat black textured paint on it!Good question.
To the best of my knowledge, the 'Special' was the name - and model - of a car which Buick produced for almost 3 decades, from the mid 30's through the early 60's, before discontinuing the name. It tended to be among the cheaper or more economical cars Buick made, and there were a whole different variety of changing styles and looks, depending on the year and the existing automotive fashions or design cues.
I'm guessing some gentleman wearing a suit in Buick's marketing division thought 'Special' sounded cool - and customers would want to buy it. But... your guess is as good as mine
I believe the Super, at least in the 50s, was the slightly longer wheelbase version. You know how they sell the big cars with a longer version, like an Audi A8 or Audi A8L - the Super was basically the big car (Roadmaster?) with a longer wheelbase. Not sure if this was true into the 60s. I suspect the Special was the big car in a slightly higher trim (so, short wheel base of their big car, but with a higher trim).Good question.

A mid 60's Special here fully restored is around $50,000.00. Not hot rodded or customed, just restored.Buick Special asks big money here, but older model than the one above
The Special was the entry-level stripped down version. Lower trim package.I suspect the Special was the big car in a slightly higher trim (so, short wheel base of their big car, but with a higher trim).
