Micro 4/3 So what other camera alternatives are there to the OM5?

I have the FE 4-5.6/28-60mm and it's performing remarkably well indeed on the A7R4's 61MP, so I second this recommendation.
Really the only major difference I see compared to my FE 24-105 f/4 G are colours and contrast/tonality. Especially when shooting against bright lights. But much of that can be worked around or avoided. Oh, and that lens is also weather sealed! That's a big bonus in a lens that's absolutely tiny for a FF zoom. Even if the zoom range is somewhat abbreviated...

I still think that the OM5 has little competition, though. What other small but capable camera bodies are out there? Fuji, yes, but that's about it. But both are priced so high that nowadays they have to compete with full frame offerings.

Pardon my ignorance but why would someone put the vf on the left side of the camera? Middle ok, right side too close to the shutter button but..... Is there a logical reason or is some sort of legacy adaptation?

thx, That would rule out the sony because I'm right eyed if that makes any sense

Most people use their right eye to focus AND have noses. Putting in on the left lets the camera clear your nose better.

but why are most viewfinders in the middle then?
Most viewfinders on SLRs are near the center because they have to be in a straight line from the lens mount, which needs to be balanced near the middle of the camera (notice that rangefinders and SLRs both center their lens mounts more or less the same, but the viewfinder is constrained to be in the same line with SLRs).

At the risk of being an eclectic contrarian, I'm not in the market for an OM5... because I recently purchased a lightly used E-M5.3 for a reasonable price and... in my admittedly left-of-orthodox-center opinion, it may be the nicest and most capable small mu-43 camera body I have ever used. It feels 'right' and handles beautifully. It works splendidly with both Olympus and Panasonic lenses, and I find its compactness, usability and quality shockingly good. The plastic body doesn't feel either cheap or less-than-solid to me, the camera has a reassuring heft for such a small device. One final note: with the small accessory Haoge grip (which @Darmok N Jalad did a very cool and helpful review of, here), it feels much more solid with a larger or longer telephoto lens, while still not attaining the bulk of either the larger E-M1x series, or the added size and bulk of the Olympus factory add-on grip.

Plus... it's got one of the nicest shutter sounds I've ever heard on any digital mirrorless camera.

In other news, I went for a small hike today, bringing these two:
Em-5 og Em-10 MkII.jpg

Original EM-5, released in 2012 and EM-10Mk II released in 2015, with the 12-50 and 40-150 mm plastic fantastic lenses.

They still work fine, and the complete shown line-up, with the full battery grip mounted on the EM-5 was less than €400 bought in the last 8 weeks or so.

We are somewhat spoilt rotten. 😂

Btw, what is the purpose of a square/rect. lens hood compared to the tradtional lens hood? The rubber collapsible hoods, I get. Is it a style or is it a functional thing?

No idea, I tend to stick to OEM style lens hoods, even if most of the ones I have for Olympus are JJC branded. I think it was some sort of Leica trope from old and it just carried over on a few models. It could possibly have something to do with a more proper construct based on picture ratios, but I find them somewhat of a hassle.

The more I ponder it, the more baffling the lack of front control dial on the A7c is. Out of curiosity, I had another look at one yesterday. The styling appeals to me , I could MAYBE accept the somewhat substandard evf, but my instinctive response was - again, like my first interest when they were released- annoyance at no dial under or around the shutter button. A joystick would've been useful too. (That applies to the Om5 as well, I love joysticks for moving AF points).

I had a very similar response with the Fuji X-e4 as well.

I remain hopeful, but not optimistic, that Panny (or maybe sigma!!) build me a decent FF "rangefinder style" body. Otherwise, one day, I'll buy an Xpro.

The 40-150 is a pretty good lens and it’s always been really cheap.

Got it somewhat to see what the fuzz was about, think I paid 90 bucks for it inc postage, but havent used it much yet. They go for 210,- new up here.

The reverse twist vs the Lumix lenses I am used to is strange, and even stranger is that I havent noted it much on the 12-50 or the 14-42EZs, it may have something to do with the reach, possibly...
